Shouldn't we pay half price for chips since they are half air/half product?

They go by the weight of the content, and not the size of the bag.

I had no idea that so many people have such little understanding (answerers, not the asker)...It can be down right scary!

When you buy the chips you are buying an advertised weight. The only way this could be a scam is if you purchased 16oz of Potato Chips and only received 14oz in the bag. The air is to keep the chips from being nothing but crumbs when you open the bag. If the bag were closed directly around the chips with no room for movement they would be pulverised before they got out of the factory! Not everyone is out to rip you off...

Sorry if I came off brash, but it gets frustrating to read these answers sometimes. If you don't know the answer to a question by education you really shouldn't answer. I saw an answer to a chicken question the other day that if followed would poison someone...

When they fill the bags the chips inside are whole (like the ones on the top). Through packing and shipping and stocking, chips break and take up less room. That means the bag is "half empty" you are paying for the weight on the packaging. Not how many could theoretically fit in the bag.

Potato chips are measured by weight. Then during shipment, etc. they "settle" in the bag. A liquid is measured in liquid ounces and of course can't "settle" in the can or bottle. Also I've been told that in the chips is actually a Nitrogen mixture instead of oxygen. This helps keep the potato chips fresh. I don't know if that's true or not, but it sounds good any way.

Because if there were too many chips in the bag they would get all crushed everytime you picked up the bag, or placed it on the shelf for sale... there is a cushion of air to protect the chips

Because the products are sold by weight not the size of the packaging. This means that in transport the chips will settle on the bottom of the packagecausing it to seem as though you don't get as much.

No, because the weight that is in the bag is listed on the outside. They just put extra air in the bags to provide a cushion for the chips when they're packed in boxes, so they don't get smashed.

If you pay the same price for the chips as you pay for the bottled contents then it is fine. Chips are sold by weight and liquids by volume.

No, the bags are intentionally larger to allow for settling of the product and to ensure they get to the store without be CRUSHED!! Both are sold by WEIGHT not by the size of the bag/bottle.

because the air contained in the bag easily acts as one of those buffer for the chips. If the chips were in smaller bags, you ought to be procuring no longer something yet crumbs and damaged products.
