Is this for lunches at school? or an allowance?

If it's lunches at school, I have no idea.

If it's an allowance, "what, you mean food, shelter, clothing, and all the toys I buy you aren't enough?"

Try doing something different. Make them earn their money. How much do they do in chores? Base it off of Thai child labor scale, so somewhere between 4-8 dollars for 16 hours of work depending on experience.

Or instead of giving them an allowance with money, give them an allowance of time. Vouchers for time on computer, with game boy, in front of tv, playing video games, and the like.

Or just be like everyone else today and spoil your kids rotten so that they will be living with you until they are 30.

I am absolutely amazed by the question and also by most of the answers. What are you thinking? Do you think you HAVE to give them money? Why do they need it? Are they earning it? And SEVEN years old!!?? What could a 7 year old possibly need money for? Actually the same goes for the others too. I admit, my child is only 3 and as far as I know she doesn't have any clue about what money is. And I can assure you that she will not be receiving any kind of allowance for many years to come. If I had to guess I would say a good age to start giving an allowance might be 16, and then only depending on what she does to earn it. Children have many other things to do (or should have) rather than spending money. I just cannot believe this question - what has happened to parents? You know, the older people who are supposed to raise the children and teach them the right things to do? WAKE UP people.

Before I was 18, I always got an allowance every other week the amount equivalent to my age. Like when I was 12, I received 12 bucks every other week. Same went for when I was 13, 14, 15 and so on. Of course, if I needed more for school or some jazz like that, it's different. Anymore I think spoils them.

A good rule of thumb is to have the dollar amounts match the age plus 2 each week. $9 for 7 year old, $12 for a 10 year old and $14 for a 12 year old.

Just remeber that allowances are earned like a job....Kids should have to earn there money by doing chores, hw, good grades, etc. Also teach them to use their money wisely by making them save it in order to buy something they want.

In this day and age? 7yr old $5, 10yr old $10, and the 12yr old $15. What are they doing to deserve this money weekly? You have to teach kids the value of a dollar and that they cant get every thing they want. If they don't earn it they will go through life expecting ppl to give them what ever. My kids no better. YOU DON'T WORK! YOU DON'T EAT! and doing things that they should do anyway like cleaning their room, going to school taking out the trash, cleaning up the mess they made and doing homework is not work it is what they should be doing anyway.,

A week?? Your talking (in all the previous posts) like 60 bucks a month for the 12 year old, what is he gonna do with $60??? That would be $720 a year!!!

Unless this child is working in a family business or something similar, I would say 20 bucks a month, tops!

I would suggest $10, $5 and $2. Don't just give them the money, but let them earn it. It will mean more to them that way. Let them do simple chores like carry out trash, wash dishes, sort laundry, clean bathroom, fold towels, vacuum, dust, feed and water pets, and clean their own room. Don't make the chores a burden but a reward. Have them save part of it for something special for them self. The chores you give them will take work off you where you will have more time for them.

12 - 15-20 dollars
10 - 15 dollars
7 - 10 dollars

Anything more and they'll just waste it. This is enough for a trip to the movies.
