Just about everyone cares about their environment if it affects their health or livelihood (noxious air pollution, unsafe drinking water or food, dangerous radiation, dangerous weather phenomena caused by global warming, excessive noise etc). The ways in which industry, farming and other human activities impact on the environment is complex and environmental scientists help in the evaluation of these problems. OK I guess like most other people they may be considered at times to be unimportant, and just doing their little job, until something goes wrong and then the accusation is that they didn't do it properly.
