the stereotype is that all people who take the GED are loser dropouts from high school.. but it's not really an accepted view anymore.. most employers are satisfied that you tried to complete your education.
i strongly suggest you take the exam if you are not enrolled in school.
and if you are home schooled tell employers that.. it is widely percieved that home schooled people are far more educated than public school graduates.

As a teacher, I can tell you this much: I agree with the other responses that you should get the GED if necessary. However, a GED can be a sign of " issues" and a red flag to some employers. Be clear about why you got a GED. IE: illness, family hardship, dropped out a few years back, but got my act together, finish school earlier to go to college. Here are some reasons that can be red flags: hated school, problems with law and/or not allowed on school grounds, couldn't pass the course work, school attendance(truancy). The truly best thing is to do some sort of continuing education. No one really cares about how you completed your h.s. education when you have more training and credentials under your belt.

Yes, it still exists, it used to be fairly easy for many people to pass without studying beforehand, but it has gotten harder, and it's almost as good as a high school diploma.
