Because they want to sit up high and look down on people like me in my little Ford Escort and try to run us off the road. They're always driving up too close on people's bumpers and their headlights are so blinding at night that it's ridiculous. But when they get in the least minor fender bender and they go flipping over uncontrollably, they wanna sue the company who made the damn truck like they didn't know it wasn't safe from the beginning.

They are not the worst cars ever. There have been plenty of poor cars in the last hundred years or so over which even the least impressive of today's SUVs would be a vast improvement.

These days if you live in the country the roads are good and you can get away with having a normal car, but if you live in London, the potholes and speedhumps would quickly cause serious damage to a normal car, and something with greater wheel travel is necessary. A full-blown off-roader would be too crude and uncomfortable, but a road-biased SUV would be perfect.

The majority of them are pretty normal cars, just jacked-up estates/hatches. No different in an accident to a people carrier or delivery van. Only a few top of the range models are especially heavy/thirst.

Why does everyone get caught up in this political nonsense?

The worst polluters in most UK cities are taxis, especially Black Cabs which don't meet Euro 1 emission standards. The SUVs people are complaining about all meet Euro VI now.

Let's start looking at the realities - SUVs and their drivers are not the devil incarnate.

They are actually not safe, they have a higher rate for toppling over. Some people buy them because they like to off road/drive in snowy areas. Some people buy them because they have children, and it is easier to put a kid up in a seat, the bend down, and there is more room for a pram, bags etc. I like the smaller ones like some of the ones by BMW or Volvo or Porsche, I don't see any point for those huge ones like suburbans or Tahoes. I used to have an SUV, and now I have a car, and I am so much happier.

People buy SUVs because in the event of a car accident, they would rather spend 5 minutes of their selfish lives mourning the deaths they caused in the other car, than worrying about how to become better drivers themselves.

Why do people buy SUVs?
So that they can look slimmer. You see, it is all relative.

According to one magazine article I read (can't remember which), overweight or obese people tend to buy SUV's because those cars are so much larger than regular cars it makes them look slimmer or more petite.
