a calorie is a unit of energy: one calorie is the energy needed to raise one ounce of water one degree .
I dont' remember exactly how they figure out the number of calories in something but burning, in a laboratory, is part of it.
So when you eat something high in calories, you eat all these units of energy, which if you don't use them, will be stored. but if you burn them off with activity, won't

A calorie is a measure of heat and is really short for a kilocalorie. The word was just shortened for convenience. A calorie, being a measure of heat is used to measure the nutritional value of food. The more calories a food has, the more heat and energy your body needs to use to digest and utilize it. For example a burger has more calories than spinach. Thus, your body has to do less work to digest and use the spinach than the burger. So that is a calorie for you.

It is a measure of energy, like when your body breaks down sugar it gets energy from that sugar. There are formulas to figure out how many calories something has but unless your doing chemistry you probably will only need to know what is printed on the label of food containters.

A calorie is a unit for the measurement of energy.
Mike V said that 'it is really short for a kilocalorie'. But its not true. calorie and kilocalorie both r unit of energy and 1 kilo calorie= 1000 calorie.
When we eat foods, they r digested and finally metabolised to get energy in the form of ATP. This energy is measured in calorie unit. this energy is produced in the mitochondria of our cell.thus our cells get energy for their activity.
If a food material has less calories that means it provides less amount of energy. Body needs certain amount of energy. so it metabolise foods upto its need of energy. excess part is deposited in body. if excess deposition occurs it may produce diseases. so high caloric foods r avoided in adult persons after age 30.high caloric foods are good for growing children or person as their increased growth needs more energy.

A calorie is a measurement of energy and its how food is rated. As I'm sure you know, too much and you'll gain weight.
Calories are not in your bloodstream, per se, only in the food sitting there in front of you.
Once its in your body, it gets converted to sugars, fiber, fat-- whatever the food itself it made of.
I hope that helped!
