First, pray for him and for God to guide you as you strive to help him. (below is a link to some prayers regarding addiction that you might find helpful) Tell him how much God loves Him and wants to be his strength. That God knows just how much he is hurting and wants to change his life. Remind him that it is he who has moved away from God. And that God is just waiting for him to turn back. God will accept him with open arms. Then you must realize that he has to be willing to take the steps necessary to overcome his addictions. Until he's ready praying may be the only thing you can do for him.
Heavenly Father, I know you hear the sincere desire of your child to help another who is in the throes of addiction. Please help them to get through to their friend, to encourage, love and support them. You know the needs and desires of all your children. I pray in Jesus' Name. Amen.

Dear Shelsi, This man/boy is writing his testimony. Someday he will be delivered. In the meantime, pray for him and with him. A word of warning: don't push him. Keep him close to you so you can keep an eye on him. My husband was delivered from alcoholism years ago after years of praying and crying. He gave his heart to the Lord one day and never went back to drinking. So, yes, believe that God can deliver and heal anybody from addictions. Just pray, and pray and pray.

The best thing we can do to assist sometimes is just to listen. Example, if a tragedy befell a friend you have never experienced what can you really say? Haven't you ever had something you thought was the end of the world and EVERYONE thought they knew just what to say? It can be really frustrating! A good listener is worth more than their wight in gold!

Sometimes its best just to keep quiet and be there for him. A hug can speak more then 1000 words.

Continue to love him, when it is time for him to listen remind him that God loves him and that God wants us to love him, love others as you would yourself, that is it live and love life! Sometimes when down, we tend to forget what we live for, remind him of his hearts desires. Ask him what do you like to do, and then go for it.

There's not a whole lot you can do other than urge him to get help. Only he can make the choices he needs to make and he needs to do what's best for him - and maybe that's the best thing to say.

Words are not always a necessity. Sometimes being a good listener is the key.

Tell him to go to a god-dammed treatment center. If he says no, call one for him.
