--Is Catholic--

The Syrian Catholics are very different from Latin Catholics. The Syrian Catholics arise out of the Antiocene Church which was founded by St. Peter BEFORE he founded the Church of Rome. They are also not like the Churches that sprung from Constantinople or the Greek and later Slavoc Churches who follow the Byzantine Rite. The Antiocene liturgy is considerably older following that of the Apostle St. James who designed their liturgy. The Antiocene's were also originally primarily Aramaic and Semitic in makeup, not Latin or Greek so there is a greater retention of the Hebraic forms and thoughts.

The Catholic Church is not governed exactly how you think it is. The Universal Catholic Church is broken down into Patriarchal Sees, each which is governed by their own specific patriarch. Each of these Patriarch's has complete and total authority for what occurs within his own Church. The Roman Patriarch is Benedict XVI while the Syrian Patriarch is "Beatitude Ignace Pierre VIII Abdel-Ahad, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East of the Syrians". The Roman Patriarch Benedict XVI also functions as the Universal Patriarch, the Servant of the Servants of God. His authority over the Churches as Universal Patriarch is not as one who is over them, but rather as one with whom the other Churches are united.

We could say that "the pope is the rule of faith" but not "the ruler of the faith". Each Patriarch is the Ruler of the faith for his Church, and each Bishop for his diocese, but only through union with his Patriarch. Each Patriarch rules in union with the Universal Patriarch, the pope. However, if the Patriarch leaves union with the Pope, and takes his Church out of communion, his Church remains a true Church unless the mark of apostolic succession is broken. The pope's authority over the other Churches is something that only can extend when discussing matters of universal Faith and Morals. It is something that only extends in extraordinary situations. All normal activity is left to the Patriarch of that Particular Church.

The Syrian Catholic Church is one of several semi-autonomous Christian churches, which are affiliated to the Catholic Church through the Antiochene Rite.

By this, the Syrian branch is allowed to retain its customs and rites, even when these differ from the traditions of the Catholic Church.

They follow the liturgy of St. James, which even today is performed in Syriac. Syriac is still spoken in some few communities in eastern Syria and northern Iraq, but for most, Arabic is the vernacular language.

With love in Christ.
