There is a lot of nonsense being spoken in these answers.

I am a doctor, and I KNOW practising doctors who have mental illness, suffering from schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder, clinical depression. The important thing is that they have sought help, have received treatment and are functioning as effective doctors, and probably better doctors for having been patients themselves.

When I was a student I knew a psychiatrist working on a schizophrenia unit who suffered from schizophrenia, but was well-controlled with medication. She knew, and her colleagues knew, when her medication was slightly off and her psychiatrist would adjust it.

And also the comment above about doctor's with Down Syndrome is almost impossible. Down syndrome causes marked learning disability. Autism - possible, but I suspect the doctor more likely had Asperger's syndrome.

And schizophrenia is NOT the same as multiple personality disorder.

1. How can Holy Water do anything? Holy water usally has hyssop and or myrrh. infused in it. I am an expert on these things. They are powerful agents and they work. I have personal experience with this. 2. If the devil is real. It is not language and geometry. Naturally you see things in this superficial context. It is Michael the Archangel that is the master of the devil. This war over humanity goes on. 3. Psychiatry is one of the most useless branches of medicine. Anyone who's ever gone to one will tell you what a waste of time it is. They spend fifteen minutes with you, write a prescription and tell your family to "learn to cope". At least an exorcism does something. It's funny, after the rite the person returns to normal. Psychiatry cannot explain this. They really can't do much of anything. 4. Why isn't the person mentally ill all the time? Why do they return to normal after a successful exorcism? You cannot explain this. What mental help are you going to offer? 5. You do indeed get the full story. Many people go on to live normal lives. Also, the Catholic church requires a psychiatric evaluation before proceeding. Psychiatry has NO CLUE what this is or what to do.

It all depends on how severe the schizophrenia is. Some doctors might have a mild form (what may be called a schizoid personality) that enables them to function normally.

Dr. Sarah_B: Very funny. Made me laugh a lot. I don't think I know of any doctors who were autistic or had down syndrome. As for a beautiful mind, remember it was just a movie supposedly based on fact? :-)

YES, this seems like an Oxy-Moron, you are right Chris.WHOM SHOULD WE BELIEVE? I was reading too that researchrs have discovered that the nicotine found in tobacco corrects a genetic abnormality in schizophrenia. This abnormality impairs the ability of a person to shut out irrelevant stimuli in the environment and leads to the person feeling overwhelmed by what is happening around them. In fact, a common practice in the treatment of schizophrenia is to put the person in a “quiet room,” which is a standard feature of psychiatric wards. Persons with schizophrenia become much less agitated and overwhelmed when placed in quiet rooms because of the reduction in stimuli, recent research have discovered. But medical doctors do not encourage people with schizophrenia to smoke because the adverse health effects of tobacco are very serious -cancer, heart disease, stroke, cataracts and osteoporosis-and also can significantly shorten the life span of smokers. We have all read about the dangers of smoking cigarettes to our general health. Additional information suggests that smoking cigarettes may also cause brain damage. Other studies suggest that smoking cigarettes actually lowers smoker’s intelligence. The studies indicated that smokers performed worse on tests that measured their thinking abilities when they were compared either to people who stopped smoking or to those who never smoked cigarettes. The study suggested smoking might affect the oxidation process of the brain neurons. Oxidation is the process in which cells obtain energy from oxygen. All cells for proper function need the oxygen. The brain requires a considerable amount of oxygen to keep the cells functioning and healthy. The research seems to suggest that the elements in cigarette tobacco clog the lungs and prevent enough oxygen from entering the system. If it is true that cigarettes cause less oxygen to reach the brain, it could cause the premature death of necessary brain cells, lowering the smoker’s ability to think. I found that cigarette smoking affects my thinking.. Because the more I smoke in my system the less oxygen goes in my brain. This affects my thinking in a negative way. Does nicotine increases my dopamine levels, and calms me down, right? So, I’m calmer but less productive. YES, this seems like an Oxy-Moron, you are right Chris, whom we have to believe? Take care as always

OH YES!!! First of all If there is a will there is a way. I have heard of people with Down syndrome and Autism as doctors, and one famous person a Mathematician had it (Watch A Beautiful Mind for details). With support for anything and lots of love and luck many people overcome them. (Even know they still stay!)

Well, practice makes perfect.

Why not, doctor's are real people too. Do you know any doctors who don't have an issue of some sort or another?

Schitzophrenia makes people hallucinate and lose their mind so he wouldnt be able to practice becasue he'd be prescribing medicines not right. Even if he had schitzophrenia which comes as a symptom with other mental diseases he wouldn'tbe able to get his doctor degree.

The voices in his head with medical degrees can go right ahead and keep practicing. The other ones can't.
