My computer started freezing up one day and i could not figure out the problem so i did a system recovery, i used "getdataback" software to recover a lot of files.
after the system recovery my comp went back to factory settings (xp service pack 1) it worked fine!!!
i did the auto update for microsoft, was up to date on everything including xp service pack 2
now when my computer turns on it loads everything up...i then move the mouse and it freezes. the screen gets disoriented and nothing will work...is this a virus? something not compatable? any suggestions? HELP PLEASE

i have tried safe mode and it will run fine in safte mode (granted not all programs are running under safe mode) so that there tells me its not really in the main files that are needed to run windows (at least i would assume)
i would love to run a virus scan but by the time my comp. boots up and i try to run a scan it freezes...and its not like if freezes from memory loss, it freezes with a bunch of distordes colors and loooks horrible...

Try updating the drivers for your video card, nic, sound card, system board etc.

It could be a number of things. I would think it is not a virus unless it is one that only attacks SP2 or something. I suggest you backup your data once you get it back to SP1 then do a complete reformat no virus will survive that.

But before you reformat you should try other things first. Safe mode is just a though but it could help you. The more info you give us the more better chance we have at solving this. You gave enough info you should get on an other PC and post this on some more PC help forums and search for answers your self
as well. Good luck its most likely a setting or missing and or corrupt file something along that line.

Is your PC just active extremely slow? My Friends PC did this because there were too many programs most of them spy ware and stuff draining his PC speed. You can open task manager during start up before it freezes and maybe close off some tasks to get enough speed to search for other problems as well.

No, you probably have too many processes running in the background. Sp2 is not your problem.

Run a virus and spyware program to remove some of the things you don't wanyt running and it should work fine.

Run it up in the "safe" mode and look at task manager's info. Get anti-virus programs if needed.

do yourself a favor - go out and buy a fresh Windows XP (whatever version you have - home, professional, etc) and have someone do a clean install of Windows XP, then upgrade it with SP2.

It probably has something to do with factory settings, if it is doing that - because my computer has more problems that I can even bother mentioning when SP1 is installed.

It is probably a virus, it happened to me....I just did a system recovery, then I ran a new antivirus, the Norton. Good Luck.
