I'm a teen in the suburbs. I'm wondering what it is like to live in "The City".

For me, the only view of living in the city has been through some day trips and through Holden Caulfield in "Catcher in the Rye".

I grew up in the city my whole life. It was pretty fun being a teen, you grow up a lot quicker because you can move about via public transportation from a relatively young age as opposed to waiting until 15, 16, or 17, when you get your driver's license, to be able to go where you want to go. Most of us were riding buses or subways home around age 11, and then to a certain extent, by 13 or 14 just going wherever we wanted to go.

Also, there are so many things I do, I remember going to these "little peoples" concerts (I don't mean midgets), but it was a serious of symphonies and operas at Lincoln Center put on for children. There are also many museums to go to, cafes to hang out at, parks... anywhere. Basically we NEVER hung out in someone's basement... first because we had no basements, and secondly, how boring is THAT when there are so many places to go to.

Just like growing up in any other City. You are exposed to so much stimuli and choices, good and bad. You learn about the good, bad, ugly, the cons and the Johns. The Tar beaches without Ocean cool breezes and sand; the cement coated playground with dangerous stainless steel monsters waiting to chew on your skin and bones; wiseguys, wise asses, and wannabes; observing different kinds of body languages all at once; sharing the same gum and soda with your friends; being home before the street lights go on, or else you get the belt strap across your back; calling your friends via the windows, instead of on a phone; playing games only city kids invented. These are some of the "Likes" of life in the City. Oh Yeah, the most important of all----Learning and storing all that "Street Smarts".
Priceless!
PS....an extra bonus was all the different smells/odors too.
I now have the nose of a coon hound.
