I have a small home with lots and lots of clothes, and other things I need. How can I in-expensively create more places for clothing, etc?

I too have a small home and I do a couple things...

1. Corner shelves give great places to put small items, books, etc.
2. Drawer dividers to get the maximum amount of storage without the drawer turning into a jumbled mess.
3. Tall cabinets or shelving (go to the ceiling if you can). Most cabinets I found were only about 5-6 feet high. I found some that were 7-8 and I put them in my basement. I hang a folding stool next to it and use it to store seasonal items.
4. Put your bed up on raising blocks. You can buy taller under the bed storage if you can raise it up a bit.

Hope that gives you some ideas...good luck.

Clean out your closet!!! I spent an entire day last month going through my closets and pitching anything that I haven't worn in 6 months that wasn't seasonal (IE, long johns, sweaters, etc) and installed a closet system. I put in a hanging wine rack under the upper cabinets in the kitchen, use the open soffit above the cabinets for storage and put in a pot rack on the wall. I also picked up an armoire free and use that for coats and linens. I also built my own wall shelf unit. Not the most beautiful thing in the world but I can get a lot in it!

One thing you can do is raise your furniture, and put things under the furniture. I did this in my bedroom.I raised my bed so that I had 2 feet of storage and I put some things I don't use all the time or that are seasonal (like heavy winter clothing in summer) under the bed til needed. I even have a small two drawer chest under one side. But you can do that in a living room under couch, love seat, etc.
Also you can use old suitcases stacked as coffee table and store things in them. An ottoman with a lid that lifts off works well too.

I have very little storage also, and I keep my off-season clothes in suitcases. Going vertical in the closet space you do have is important, as well as storing things under beds. But it's also good to go through your things periodically to get rid of anything that you don't wear.

Try www.ikea.com for great ideas - they specialize in expanding storage in small spaces! Things like storage containers that slide under your bed, closet expanders/organizers, ways to maxamize shelving, coffee tables that double as storage chests, etc.

IKEA has great and CHEAP storage solutions for small areas.....everything in Norway is small....housing -wise. Other than that I would say to evaluate whatever closet space you have and decide if it could be used to a better purpose than the one you are using it for now.

My suggestion is to declutter what you have first. Do you really need to hang onto everything you need to store or could some of it be given away, donated, or thrown away? You say you have lots and lots of clothes - do you truly wear them all? If you don't get rid of them because they are taking up precious space. Good luck!
