IF the puppy comes from a good breeder, they will tell you what the puppy is eating, give you some, and tell you when/if you will need to switch.
They will also give you guidance on crate training. That is what they are there for.

If you feed crap like puppy chow that is mostly corn, be prepared for BIG piles of poop. The more corn in, the more corn out!!!!!!

Purina Puppy Chow. It had all the good stuff for growing puppies, and has been on the market for a long time. You may need to soften it a bit at first, but you also need to know what food the breeder has her on. If it is different than the food you choose, mix it half and half with the food she is used to eating. Gradually add more of the food you'll be feeding her, and less of the food the breeder fed her. Crate training is a good thing, a puppy, or dog, is a den animal, and the crate will become a safe haven for your puppy. Make sure you leave the door open during the day when you are at home, so she can go in if she feels the need to. Also, don't let her sleep with you even for the first night you have her home, she has a very good memory, and will not want to be in the crate at all, after that first night. NEVER use the crate to punish her. She will then think of it as a bad place, like a child who has to sit in the corner. Also, if you travel by car, put her in the crate. If ever, God forbid, you are in an accident, you don't need your puppy wandering around by the roadside, and getting hit, or lost. All involved will kinda be in shock, and not really thinking about a puppy. I have a puppy, Shiba Inu, and I think they are related to the Akita, somehow down the line. Also, take a towel or small blanket to the breeder, and get your pup's moms' smell on it, also the littermates smell. It will come in very handy the first few nights when she misses her "Homies".Good luck with your puppy, no matter what food you feed her, and whether or not you crate train her.

Make sure it is a large dog puppy food, and go as expensive as you are willing to spend probably about once a month. My puppy uses @ 40 pounds a month of IAMS large breed puppy food. She is a 50 lb. German Shepard mix. Don't feed your dog cheap brands like Old Roy, they are all filler and no nutrients or vitamins. Dry food is best for their teeth, but use soft food if their teeth seem tender from teething. Try not to change brands of food too rapidly either, it will make your dog have the runs.

Dogs will eat less of the better brands than the cheap ones too. They actually fill up on the better nutrients.

Yes crate training is wonderful. We only put our dog in the crate while we were sleeping or at work. Some folks feed in the crate too. Search the Internet, there are a lot of great articles to help you out. I also recommend spending money on puppy training class, it's great to help socialize, and it trains you as well as your puppy.

Good luck, nice choice of dog.

CRATE TRAINING IS A MUST FOR ALL PUPPIES, THEY INSTINCTUALLY LIKE THE CRATE ITS LIKE THEIR DEN. As for food, depends on your income and what you can afford. There's lots of dog foods out there, I used Plain ol Purina Puppy Chow, they were the first to put a puppy food on the market, cant go wrong there. Iams n Eukanuba are made by same company. There's a organic puppy food too. Anything thats made with Lamb&rice, chicken&rice, beef&rice, gave my dogs wicked gas... but thats up to you. I personally dont see the big deal on the big name brands... Purina Puppy Chow worked fine for my dogs and they are all healthy pure breds. Iams and Eukanuba run from anywhere especially that you have a bigger breed that would require a 40lbs bag every 4 weeks or so..... $30-$50 on average.....

Any kind of large breed puppy food to keep her from growing too fast. Yes, crate training has worked great for my lab puppy; he is 4 months and totally housetrained. He goes in his bed at night with no complaints and sleeps all night.

Yes crate train her it will help when she gets really wild and when you leave. You know she will be safe and not able to get into things that could hurt her.
Check out www.spoiled-rotten-pets.com
Look under the Payton section for a guide on how to rate your dog food.
They also sell some of the very best pet food available today.
You need to be feeding something for large breed dogs. Akitas get big and they grow fast. You need to be sure their bones are gorwing slow enough to be dense enough to handle theweight that they will gain.
They are wonderful dogs my sister has one and i really like him alot. His name is Moose.

Purina Puppy Chow is good and not too expensive (but not the cheap crap either). We fed my puppy that and all 4 of our cats have Purina food and like it. If your pup is big, they have a large breed formula.

Eukanuba is really good; my dog ate that when she was a puppy. Now (at 5 years old) she eats Alpo, Beneful, Kibbles N' Bits, and Purina! Eukanuba is quite pricey though!
