I have a couple of vacation days next month and want to take my 9 and 10 year old somewhere they will always remember. I'm on a single-moms budget. It would have to be within 2 hours of Los Angeles (driving). Please help! Thanks.

How about Tierra Rejada Farms in Moorpark, they have pick your own fruits, petting zoos and my kids LOVE it. They'll even eat the veggies they pick.

Filmore train rides are fun as well and not too much.

Thousand Oaks has a lot of good hiking trails.

You don't say if they are girls or boys - but afternoon tea at the Huntington Library is a lot of fun and then walk around afterwards.

The Santa Barbara Zoo is a nice small zoo and you can rent surreys afterwards and bike the boardwalk.

The science center and natural history museum are both wonderful museum and you can take in a movie at the IMAX theater.

Right now you can get a free childs admission to Universal with a paid adults.

Vemtura Fairgrounds often have stack car races - not expensive and trhe kids love them.

The beach is always fun.. and cheap!
You can go to the Huntington Beach and one portion you can build a bon fire.. I think its the state run side. Parking isn't free, but you can build a bon fire, make s'mores, and hang out.

LegoLand is fun for the little kids. You can get discounted tickets at Costco or one of the grocery stores like Ralphs. Or, if you're wiling to drive to Balboa, take a harbor cruise. Its not expensive, and its like a 2 hour boat ride, and they'll take you out to see the Sea Lions.

If you want to spend a weekend away... drive down to San Diego. You can find inexpensive hotels at hotwire.com (3 star hotels for as little as $65 a night) and you can make a day trip across the border to Tijuana. Park on the San Diego side and walk across or take the trolley.

San Diego has the zoo, animal park, sea world, and lots of open parks. And.. since its summer, catch a ball game at Petco park, or locally with the Dodgers or Angels.

In August the ESPN X-Games will be in the Staples Center in LA. Check that out!

Santa Cruz is always a fun vacation and generally pretty cheap because all you want to do is swim on the beach. The resteraunts there are fairly expensive, though. There is one pizza shop that is cheap and has lots of children in it. There is the Santa Cruz boardwalk which is really cool but I think the tickets prices are around 10 each... I am not sure how long Santa Cruz is in driving time from Los Angeles. I live in Berkeley (just outside San Fran.) and it takes about an hour because of traffic...

You need an EXPENSIVE place to take your kids??? AND you're a single mom?? WHAT!???!???

Expensive but fun: New Zealand - they have some CRAZY fun things to do there. A ball that you get in and roll down a hill like a gerbal in a ball, and a you're the airplane doo-hicky.

INEXPENSIVE but fun: How about just going to a nice park and being with their Mom? Doing special things that are out of the ordinary can be low key but make a lasting impression.

I know of a couple cheaper things you could do...
I just visted the Kidspace Science museum in Pasadena and it was awesome. It's an 8 dollar admission.
And then the Getty Museum has family days every Sunday. They have all kinds of art activities for kids.Parking is $7, but admission is free.
