The Impressionists were concerned with the effects of light. The term Impressionism came from a painting by Monet called "Impressions, Sunrise" that showed the morning sun hitting the water, creating a dappled effect. They were also mostly in and around Paris and were kind of reacting against the "academy" style of the time which was very refined and staid. They had looser brush strokes and more imaginative compositions.

Light. The impressionist wanted to capture the effects of light on different object. For that they needed to paint extremely fast and that is why when they first showed their pictures art critics of the time dismissed them as unfinished.
Monet has two famous studies of the effects of light on his 'haystacks' series and the 'Rouen Cathedral' which he painted from his studio window.

I think it was their belief in freedom of expression, and not being dictated as to what content they must adhere to as well as having the freedom to market their own works without the necessity of a sponser.
