We know a young family that are moving to another state, any ideas on gifts. They have 2 small children.

Something small - packing more stuff like a basket would be a pain.

Personally, I'd invite them to dinner one of their last nights in town. They would appreciate not having to cook and pack at the same time. I'd make up a small activity bag for each child for the trip as a gift. Then, have someone take a digital picture of your family and theirs before the end of the evening. You could either print it out and give it to them before they left - or email it to them later.

I became close to a military family. When they got their orders to move I made each of them their own tie quilt. Two years later they're still using their blankets everyday.

Buy two 3-6 yard sheets of polar fleece, the size of the fabric will depend of the size of the person. Once you have your fabric line the two pieces together so that all sides line up. Lay your fabric out on a flat surface. My aunt uses the floor, I like to lay it out on the table. Cut a 4"X4" square of our each corner. Start with one side measure out 4"strips with a ruler, use a piece of chalk to mark your lines, then cut your strips. Once the edge of your blanket is cut, tie the top strips and the lower strips together in a knot. Continue this along the edge of each side until your blanket is comprised of two sheets of fabric surrounded by fringes.

Another good idea is making a book of information about their new state. I would buy a three ring binder then cruise the internet for information about the history, travel and attractions, maps, ect within their new state. Do you know what town they're moving to? Print out a map from their new house to the closest grocerie store or movie theater.

The day they leave give then little travel packages. Buy four cheap gift bags and fill each one according to the person you're giving it to. For the parents I would include a book or favorite magazine, gum or mints, a comb or brush, a mini medicine kit with asprin and kleenex, a key chain that reresents the state they're leaving, and anything else you think they might like. For the kids I would include a small candy of some sort, a small juice of some sort, animal crackers, crayons, something to color, a tiny tub of playdough or something like it to keep their hands busy. Check out bargan bins at your local thrift store, they're bound to have some inexpensive ideas.

A little care package for the children. Put some cheap small games in a lunch bag with small ziploc bags filled with healthy snacks (and guilty ones too). If you want the family to keep in touch, make some address labels of YOUR address. Maybe even a flashlight - so they'll always find their way!

Do a little research on the stores in the area they are moving too. Then get gift cards, so they can get somethings they need for their new home.

I like getting and giving gift baskets. You can put in stuff for each member of the family. It's personal and the people you're giving it to will see you care.

I would give them a picture of their house in a frame. I am sure they'd like to remember the place where they used to live.

pictures are good, but all they can do is look at it, and looking at stuff to remind you of something gets kinda boring sometimes...give them something they can use, like a welcome mat or something, so that whenever they enter their new house then they can remember their old...ya know
