FIRST NOTE,I AM ON THIS DRUG AND HAVE BEEN FOR 4 YEARS. I HAVE BEEN GETTING EXCELLENT CONSTANT RESULTS BECAUSE I TAKE IT CONTINUOUSLY. IF YOU HAVE ADD IT AFFECTS YOU ALL THE TIME NOT JUST WHEN YOU ARE AT WORK OR SCHOOL. IF YOUR SON IS DOING WELL I WOULD NOT RISK A RELAPSE BY TAKING HIM OFF. I DO HAVE ONE CONCERN THOUGH.. THE LAST I HEARD STRATTERA IS A MEDICATION FOR ADULTS WITH ADD. HOW OLD IS YOUR SON AND DID A PSYCHIATRIST OR YOUR REGULAR DOCTOR PRESCRIBE IT ? IF YOUR REGULAR DOCTOR PRESCRIBED IT AND YOUR SON IS A MINOR YOU NEED TO CHECK WITH A PHARMACIST TO FIND OUT ABOUT POTENTIAL DANGEROUS SIDE EFFECTS TO CHILDREN. ALSO IT WOULD BE IN YOUR BEST INTEREST TO CONSULT A PSYCHIATRIST FOR THESE KINDS OF MEDICATIONS. MOST GENERAL DOCTORS DO NOT KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT PSYCHIATRIC MEDICATIONS TO DISPENSE THEM EFFECTIVELY AND/OR (IN SOME CASES) CORRECTLY !!

Is he a behavior problem when he isn't in a classroom? Does he seem to tolerate the medicine well? How does HE feel about taking it?
My daughter hated taking her ADD meds, and they ruined her appetite, so I used to take her off in the summer so she'd gain a little weight. She was not hyperactive, just inattentive. Eventually, we switched her to something else (a mild anti-depressant) and it worked better with fewer side effects.
I'd base my decision on how he acts, how he feels while taking it, and (also very important) what the doctor recommends.

That depends on whether he's on it because you wanted it or because the school wanted it. Did you think he had a "condition" warranting the need for this medication, or did the school advise it because of problems he was having there? Have you consulted other doctors besides the prescribing physician.
Also, you can research natural alternatives too. There are a number of them out there.

That's up to him, you, and your doctor. I preferred to keep my daughter on during the summer, because she would get the upset stomachs for the 1st month getting used to it.
However, it's a personal choice.

You need to keep him on it until the doctor says to stop giving it to him. Stopping and starting meds can cause a lot of problems.

My son's doctor answered that same question by asking, if your child had epilepsy would you stop his/her medicine for the summer?
