Yes definetly, but you have to act early or it could be serious. See your vet and tell them about your problem. They will give you heart worm pills you need to feed to your dog once every month. My dog had heart worm and that was the solution. Hope that helps!

Although heartworms can be fatal and treatment for the disease involves risk, the condition is nearly always curable. Treatment requires careful medical care and complete rest at home afterwards.

The first thing we will do is evaluate your dog's condition, performing a physical examination, laboratory tests and chest x-rays to evaluate the condition of the heart and lungs. We might find other health problems that need attention first, or if the heartworm infestation is very severe, we might want to modify our treatment plan.

Adult heartworms are about six inches long and live mostly inside the heart. Baby heartworms are microscopic and live within blood vessels throughout the body. Each stage must be treated separately. First we eliminate the adult worms by giving a series of injections spaced out over a two day period.

When we finish treatment, your dog's heartworms will be dead or dying. That's good, but the heart is still full of worms. The worms gradually break into smaller and smaller pieces until the fragments are tiny enough for the body to eliminate them. The critical period is when worm fragments are small enough to disperse into the body but still large enough to plug small arteries in the lungs. Vigorous activity makes the heart pump faster, pushing bits of dead heartworm out into small blood vessels where they can cause trouble, so vigorous activity must be avoided.

hope this helps some

I have a Heartworm survivor. It is curable. However it is also very dangerous to treat. I was originally lied to about them being just fine after treatment. It is the most heart wrenching treatment I have ever seen. I could not adopt her out because I felt so guilty about her painful treatment. The other thing to remember is it is a worm that eats through the heart like a worm eats through an apple there may be later damage to the heart that may take time to heal. My Bess is now running with the rest of them when she wants. The heart tissue has gotten better. I stated somewhere else here that I will help treat Parvo but I can not foster HW positive dogs its very easy to foster because they are to be crated 23.5 hours a day but that just hurts me to do that. Bess hurt so bad where they injected the poison to kill the work that she would wimper when I touched her spin. (Bess is 100+ lbs)

Talk to a vet immediately about this problem. It is very serious and deadly. If you start off giving the heartworm PREVENTATIVE medication (the one that is administered every month) you could kill the dog. You need a heartworm TREATMENT medication. These are only available by perscription. Think twice about getting this pet, however. Heartworm is very easy to prevent and if the current owner hasn't doen that then you may be in for some more health problems down the road.

yes, this condition is curable, but it has to be caught in time. We had a 9 year old lab that caught them and they were not sure if he would make it threw the testing it is so harsh. We took him to the vet where he stayed over night and got treatment. He was very sore and it took a while to recover, but he is okay now. We caught it in the later state, and it did do heart damage that he will live with for the rest of his life. Please take your pet in and either have him treated or put down. This is a slow death for your pet, and it very contagious to other pets. be a responsible pet owner and do what you should!!!

It is treatable and cureable but it is expensive to have done around $700 or so for a large dog.
They have to take heartworm preventative every month for the rest of thier lives.
The treatment can sometimes kill the dog you have to keep them crated for weeks durring the treatment.
Our rescue has successfully treated quite a few for heartworm.

I know that a lot of dogs have heart worms at birth. It is curable if treated early, and easily preventable in the future. I use Sentinel, an once a month pill that my dog thinks is a treat. Sentinel also has a great guarantee if your dog uses it all year around.

Good luck.

It is curable, but in more cases than not the dog can't make it. Two years ago I lost my best friend, a yellow lab named Sheba to heartworms. We had her treated twice, but one night she died in her sleep. Looking back I would have done it exactly the same though, because when you looked in her eyes you could see the energy there, saying "Don't give up on me," let your dog speak to you, and no matter what happens always keep the memories alive.

Yes, as long as you treat it early, before the worms get too big and cause organ damage. After the worms are gone, continue to give him a monthly preventative like Heartgard.

YES ABSOLUTELY!!! One of my dogs got it this past year. Took almost 200 dollars in treatments, but she's worth it. She had a 3 day stay at the vet while getting medicine. Then a few weeks later she had to go back overnight for more medicine. Voila! healthy dog.
