Depression is still considered a chemical imbalance caused by endorphin deficiencies. This is supposed to be treated with reuptake inhibitors like Prozac, Zoloft, etc. Science does not consider the environmental factors like diet, excercise, job and family life and a positive attitude. These things are beyond the scope of any science because they vary so drastically from person the person. In order to cure a person of Depression we must improve their surroundings and provide positive group support with ongoing follow up. Depression is not simply about chemicals.
But until then we'll just keep prescribing drugs because that's what the giant pharmaceutical companies want , right ?

Because depression comes from within and medicine comes from without. Depression can only be cured from within yourself. It is a difficult process that requires a lot of work on your part. Medical science lacks the ability to get to the root problems. Popping a pill only masks the symptoms.

Because it is as much a part of every person as a brain is. There is the life/love drive and the death/destructive drive. Depression lies in the latter. I have always been depressed, so I must ask, "How do I cure myself of my own nature? Is it I that is depressed, or is it depression that I am?" Just some of my philosophy.

The main cause of depression is that reality is so far removed from dreams and what Hollywood tells us we should expect. To really cure depression they would have to be able to alter reality. No one can do that yet.
