I don't know about a sucker fish but in the early days of the Christian Church when they were persecuted by the Roman Empire an idealised drawing of a fish - based on the quote fisher's of men - was used as a means of Christians recognising each other.

That isn't a sucker fish. When early Christians were being hunted and killed for their beliefs, they used the symbol to identify safe places and fellow believers.

Fish and actually water was somehow important to christians, I think its possible that the gods had some sort of connection to it, perhaps this is where they came from. In the bible satan was thrown into the abyss, well the word abyss actually pertains to water, so satan was thrown into some watery prison, also another "coincedence" is that all vessels are refered to as she, because of the law of water, a ship was always a she, and still is because "she" is delivering something the way your mother delivered you, when you were born you came down your mothers birth canal and she delivered you, when you were delivered you needed a certificate from the Doc (doctor,Dock). The law of water also pertains to money, thats why we have the term cash "flow", and we put our money into banks.....what do (river)banks do? they control the flow of the current(cy) , of course the vatican are big on banking, but dont worry because it's all a total coincedence (yeah right)

"The Darwin fish is an ichthys symbol with "evolved" legs and feet attached and often with the word DARWIN inside (like the ÎΧÎΥΣ or JESUS found in Christian versions). It symbolizes the theory of evolution, for which Charles Darwin laid the foundation, in contrast with Christian Creationism."

Poor old Christians, such easy targets. I guess the fish thing was created by people like us who know that they always take the bait.
For some reason it puts me in mind of the Simpsons when Wiggam arrests Flanders and utters the immortal line "Where's your messiah now Flanders?", I don't know why but it's just funny. Must be the devil in me.

The fish could symbolize the power to go against the tide...to have fins the fish has power to go against the evil tides of the world...to not just follow the "herd".

well in the roman times, many christians were being prosecuted. So living in the Roman nation, christians would use the fish to show who they were to other christians so they could be idenitifed.

for the people who have spagety instead of brain :
During early Christianity, Christians were often put to death for practicing their faith, so they worshiped in secret places. A fish painted on the outside door of a house let other Christians know that they would be safe and welcome inside...
