Clarifying shampoo
Here are some home remedy (recipes) for hair and skin. I’ve used some of them and they work great. They’re also much more economic. Good luck. =)

Best product is a clarifying shampoo, as stated above. I have also used baking soda mixed in with my regular shampoo, to remove heavy build up (such as the colored halloween hairsprays)
You can help to keep the product build up to a minimum in between by rinsing with lukewarm to cool water when you are done washing your hair - it helps remove excess soap from your folicles and scalp.

Neutrogena has a clarifying shampoo that is really good. You can also use Pureology products, but these are more expensive. As far as home remedy, try a mixture of mayo, eggs and olive oil.

Build up of product could lead to hair loss. Although not cheap try Nioxin products. There are a lot of cheap products out there that you could use that do not leave a build up but they don't have fragrance or appeal like the name brands

Vinegar is very good at removing build up. You just have to get past the smell and I would recommend using it at night so you don't go to work/school the next day smelling like vinegar.

vinegar, vodka, or beer. I've only used vinegar or vodka before and it works great. When you shower, after you wash your hair rinse it with one of these, then rinse your hair with water, then condition...
