Coprophagia is the consumption of feces. There isn't a pinned down reason why dogs do it. In the wild, mothers will eat their's and their young's to prevent them from being discovered by predators. Domesticated dog, however, don't really have to be concerned with this, so it's not known for certain why. Some people speculate that it means that there is a nutritional imbalance in their diet that they are trying to make up for. Ask your veterinarian to recommend a good diet for Petey's age, weight and lifestyle. There are also some things that you can add to the food that may stop this from happening. Try putting some pineapple juice over his food, it's supposed to make the fecal matter unappetizing to them. If this doesn't help then there are products like For-Bid that you can probably pick up at your vets.

My dog used to do that (gross, yes...but many dogs do it)...it probably means they do not like the food they are eating or it is just some way to get attention. The dog will stop eventually but in the meantime try to get your dog different food and more attention.
Hope this helped!

A lot of dogs do this. You can buy this powder that gets sprinkled on his food and that might make him stop eating his own excrement if that does not work, try behavior modification

While it seems gross, some dogs are stupid.
The poop smells just like the food that he ate and therefore he thinks it is food.
