Actually there are hand held navigation systems on the market (Garmin and TomTom spring to my mind, but there are loads of different ones) which are used for biking or just walking in unfamiliar towns. They can be a bit pricey, though.
Concerning maps - it's a simple matter of practise. I used to be abysmal but after a six week roadtrip I did fairly well and now it's easier for me to look the way up on a map than follow verbal instructions....

Miss,
Satellite Navigation is one of the marvels of the modern technological world. You never need to know where you are, the system just tells you which way to turn and when. It truly takes the anxiety out of driving.
If you do not wish to buy a system, then an in car compass is actually a very good aid. I know it sounds silly but if you know if you are going N S E W it is a great improvement on being completely lost. If your mind is anything like mine (I am hopeless as well) I try to make a mental note of just a few major landmarks and learn or get used to the roads that link them together.
As you are female, have you thought of getting a male to travel with? I am currently available! Then we can be lost together! Other than that I cant help you further.
regards

some have it some don't.
you may adapt over time, depends on how much you travel around from place to place on a daily basis.
takes a bit of running around and knowing your direction to get that sense of it.
it will happen give it time. also get to know where your direction is too and that will help.
through maps, compases, looking at the sky and things around you.
remember the sun sets in the west and rises in the east.. star patterns help, weather patterns help also...

Remember which way the wind is blowing.
Keep a check on the sun.
Look out for land marks.
See which way electricity pylons are running.
Look out for big green or blue signs with writting on.
Take a big Red Indian with you when you travel.
