Depends on what you plan to do. For word processing, you can't beat MS Word. MS Excel is an excellent program for spreadsheets. These two programs are on sale - student/teacher version for anywhere from $99 to $129. I have the full Office package and can't imagine what anyone else would want. It also includes Powerpoint (for slide shows) and Access (for data processing). Personally, I don't think the home user needs Access but it is part of the program. Later versions also include Publisher. It would be nice if you could afford the whole package - the professional version. I picked it up online for $199. I'm very happy with it.

Necesary is for internet is an operating system and browser.
Useful software is a huge list.
