Don't, if your landlord finds out you snuck in your cat it could mean an automatic eviction for you. Talk to the landlord though, most places have the 'no pet' rule because a lot of people are irresponsible with their pets and the landlord doesn't want to deal with the headaches. If you can convince him that your cat would not pose a problem to him or the other tenants, explain that she's an indoor only cat, clean, quiet and declawed, he may 'bend' the rules a little. It never hurts to ask. If he doesn't "give", find another place to move that will allow your kitty.

We kept our cat a secret (somewhat). Here's the problem -- they like windows so you can't keep them out of windows. The cat will find a way. The landlord may see that way. ALSO, you will have repairs needed to be done every so often which means the landlord will show up to check on things too. Just think about all this. We could only keep it a secret for a while and finally came clean and paid the pet deposit (which was HIGH considering he's also declawed and litter trained -- kids make more of a mess than this cat). You're right - it's a crazy rule in cases like this.

Well as a former landlord I would say talk to your landord about it. Most will let a cat instead of a dog because dogs are more destructive than cats. They may charge you more rent per month to cover any "damage" but how much damage can your cat do right? As long as the cat is litter trained then you should be ok. Hopefully your landlord is nice and will allow this. I wold not sneak the cat in because they will eventually find out and can terminate your lease because you are in violation. Just make sure if they agree that it is put in writing by the landlord in the lease you sign especially the amount they may charge so they can not change it. Hope this helps

I wouldn't honestly move in if the land lord won't allow pets or talk with the land lord and tell him that she is declawed and box trained. Also some landlords will be willing to bend the rules if you offer a little more on the security deposit or $25 more onto the rent a month.... but don't move in if you haven't talked to him or else you could get yourself into a big mess especially if they make you sign a lease...

Well, if your land lord owns the place - he's kind of free to do or own whatever he likes, as well as make up the rules for others to follow. I personally don't understand why anyone who has a loved pet would consider even looking to love somewhere that they could not take the pet with them. I would also sneak the cat in, but, keep in mind - if you get caught, and push comes to shove - are you going to get rid of the cat or move? If the answer is move - don't go there in the first place. Find somewhere else to live. Keep in mind, if you are caught, you may not have the option of getting rid of the cat, they may just boot you out - and yes, if you break the rules, they can do that. Since you are just "thinking" about this place, pass on it and keep looking.

Well, if the lease says no cats and you bring a cat there and the landlord finds out, he could have grounds to evict you and perhaps keep your security deposit. Unless you get his/her permission to have a cat and modify the lease, I would not do it. It's not worth losing either your security deposit or worse...your kitty. So many kitties end up in shelters because of landlords...you did a nice thing rescuing one. I would just be honest before you sign anything. If you don't have to sign a lease with a no-pet provision, then go ahead and sneak her in...but be prepared to get caught because kitties love to hang out near windows. Good luck.

I don't know. because if you get caught the land lord might throw you out and if you don't you have a great cat and you live happily ever after. You would have to clean a lot in case of any surprise visits. Maybe you just shouldn't go to this place. Think about a new place that allows animals. I bet your kitty would be happier that way. I think that there is nothing wrong with bringing your cat in. As long as he/she is an indoor cat. There is no need to worry about the landlord finding out. Just be careful that the cat doesn't get spotted while lying in a window (they LOVE to do that!) I also had to sneak my cat in when I was renting an apartment and it worked out fine. Go for it and the worst thing that they can do is give you a warning!

I did that with my first cat, only to find out that if the landlord had indeed found out about the cat, I could have gotten evicted.
Consider how well you can keep your cat hidden. Consider how often maintenance will be coming through.
The landlord does not necessarily abide by his own rules. Ask him, instead, if you can pay him a little extra a month for your cat (like, $25 additional to the rent or add more money onto your security deposit). If he's not willing to work with you, just remember that he can throw you out for not obeying the rules.

If you sneak her in, and he brings his dogs over, OUCH!!!! The dogs will search out your kitten. Also, you don't need to be hiding her from the landlord the whole time you will be living there, which may not be too long. Ask the landlord to not bring his dogs to your place, how rude can he be? Find another place!
