No.
The AK-74 uses a 5.45x39mm round, the M-16 uses a 5.56x45mm round.
They went with the 39mm length to assist in converting the AK-47's over, which took 7.62x39mm rounds.
Most experts will tell you that the 5.56x45mm round is better because it has better fragmentation properties and therefore does more damage.
Hope that helps.

NOOOOOOOOOO....length, width and the magazine size are different form the M-16 and the Ak-74
ak-74 has a caliber = 5.45mm
ak-47 has a caliber = 7.62mm
M-16 has a caliber = 5.56mm
So my dear friend...as you can see the different round sizes, by the way...the ak-74 is the upgraded version of the ak - 47. eventhough there is a closed resemblance betwen these 2 assault rifles the ak-47 has wooden parts and the ak-74 has composite materials parts...

I never heard of an AK74, but if they have one it wouldn't surprise me if this was true. That was one of the reasons behind the AK47 being 7.62x39...so that they could fire captured 7.62mm NATO ammo.
P.S. After reading the other answers I can see that in fact there is an AK74 and judging from the calibers given in these answers I would bet anything that while not an exact fit, this was the purpose for them developing this caliber.

As it is you can't. With a modification it could. But the recoil will be too strong, I suppose.

No, but why would you? Russian ammo is dirt cheap and will last almost forever.
