The name of the person we have been taught to call Christopher Columbus was really Cristofom Colon or maybe Don Cristoval Colon. Some recourses I have found said he "choose" his name.
He was a navigator.
The name possibly means to carry the word of Christ across the big pond.

That's why at one end of the Panama Canal there is the city of Christobal and at the other end Colon.
