I have taken him to the pediatrician and he insists on him taking a prescription stool softener. The problem is that it doesn't work and I have told this to him.. He goes in his sleep too. He claims he doesn't know when he does it.

He could be looking for attention. He could be in denial. Things that might affect him are siblings getting attention, if he is spoiled. Is it possible you use to cater to him and now you do not? Did he ever use the toilet on his own?

Perhaps a schedule would work. Track his events during the day, and try to have him go prior to those times - that would be difficult.

This could just be a phase that will pass also! Especially if it is for attention.

I think you should see another doctor if this one keeps giving drugs, sounds more like in his head, and there is probably a simple solution.

Why does the doctor insist on the stool softener? I would ask for that to be justified. If he has lots of fibre, he should not need it.

If your son has the runs, perhaps he thinks he is just "tooting", and leakage happens.

Look at your son's history. Is this something new? It may also be psychological. Try another doctor. Don't give up, this is not normal!

It could be that his sphincter muscle does not work properly so he does not feel it when he has to go, but he should be able to notice when he has already gone.
