You don't even have to get turned down for credit to get a free credit report. Call the three credit bureaus, (Transunion, Equifax, and Experian), the toll free numbers can easily be found by a search. On the automated system, choose the option that says you have been turned down for credit, they will send you a report. Also, go to freeannualcreditreport.com and get a report from all three bureaus. (The information on the three can often be different). You can view those reports online immediately. Also, you can dispute any invalid info immediately. Know your credit rules, bad stuff can't be on there for more than 7 years, so if it's past that time, dispute it. You can dispute the enteries for any reason you like, they may or may not remove it. You may be required to prove certain things. I filed bankruptsy two and a half years ago and by removing things, keeping track of things, and not requesting more credit, I now have higher than a 600 FICO score. Progress can be made. It just takes time.
Best advice, KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. Search all you can on credit, do it through the credit bureaus, (they give unbiased information based on federal government requirements). Also, get on the web sites for the credit bureaus and let them know you may have been the victim of identity fraud. In order to view your report, your address and stuff must match the bureaus. The only reason it wouldn't is because someone has changed that information for you.

freecreditreport.com Experian is the best I have found. this is a great place to go but be sure you have a good firewall before entering anything like your social or something. Remember, the more times a car dealership or a bank runs a credit check on you, your credit score is lowered by 3 to 7 points. Good Luck.

You are entitled to 1 free credit report per year from each of the 3 nation wide agencies.
In addition to that, if you apply for a credit card, and are turned down, you can request a free credit report from the card that turns you down. Those ones are usually more detailed than the free ones.

You can go to one of the commercial companies that provide credit scores for a fee, or you can write to one of the three credit bureaus and request your score. You may be able to do that by phone or email, but I am not totally sure. Experian and Equifax are two of the three major bureaus, not sure about the third.
