Certain breeds - especially retrievers have an instinct to bring things back and thus the have a "need" to carry something in their mouths all the time. We have a whole basket of toys for our goldens so they can go pick something up and carry it around when they want.

Why do dogs carry sticks?
It is a trophy, and most dogs are proud to carry a stick that a human has thrown. It gives them a sense of purpose and achievement. If you try to take the stick off a dog and it wont let you, it's a victory for the dog and tells it that it is the dominant one in the pack. Not all Retrievers bring sticks back, mine doesn't, so I don't throw any for him now. My Keeshond though is nuts for sticks and footballs.

Dogs love toys and most dogs will chase sticks if they are raised on sticks. they will ignore sticks if they are raised on chew toys, they wont be very interested in sticks. The older a dog gets the less likely they will even fetch a stick as it will hurt their teeth causing pain. They much perfer the soft tennis ball.

For a dog chewing sticks is like sex for humans. It releases all the right chemicals in the brain and is totally awesome for them.

Dogs chew. The wood makes them think they are accomplishing something (tearing it up) and gives them a challenge. Be happy he didn't find a table leg or chair leg.
