Come on! This is 2006. The whole civilized world believes in monogamy. Most people can't affosd of satisfy more than one spouses...even when it is legal. But criticize Islam for polygamy and Muslims are up in arms even if they have only one spouse....Why do they insist upon a tradtion that is of no personal benefit to them and makes the whole religion look backward? BTW, what is the percent of Muslim men who have more than one wives?

Speak for yourself, honey. I happen to be very polyamorous and quite happy with it. I am polyandry which means I prefer more than one male partner.

Please provide documentation that you have interviewed the entire civilized world for your opinion.

they dont all feel strongly bout it m8....only some do n thats cuz of the higher percentage of women to men. if men only had 1 wife n a women didnt have sex b4 marriage its a fact that the population would go down.

also theres the problem off men naturally bein pervs. some men arent hppy wit 1 women so bsides goin to hookers u can take another wife.

also sme problems r found out after marriage. maybe ur wife isnt fertile. its possible for u to hav a child wit another wife

n about it bein 2006 beleive it or not religion shouldnt change over time to suit the 'modern world'

peace

Muslims believe in what Allah says whatever it is. The percentage of women in most countries are higher than the men so what is better for them to practice fornication or be a legal wife
In most Islamic countries the percentage of men who have a second wife isn't high and they have to be fair with both women otherwise they would make a sin.

They go up in in arms not because of the polygamy criticism itself, but for the feeling that you are attacking their religion, and their prophet. Anything you say that is in contradiction to what they believe in their religion, they take it as an attack on their religion, and the only way they know how to respond is attack back. Many do it verbally, but many more do it physically, and cause so much harm. First thing you most likely would hear is you are insulting our religion and prophet, after that duck fast.
The majority of Muslims are monogamous, but they wouldn't say it, because that would be consider doing it against their faith. I don't know how many of them are polygamist, but the majority are from the lower income family, or the ruling families.

actually polygamy is allowed to Muslim men if they can equally give support and love to all of 4 wives but if they can't do that they may better stop thinking marrying 4 because it would be a biggest sin to confront with in the life hereafter. not all muslim men are polygamous 99% still love ONLY 1 wife.

but don't you think polygamy is much better than having a mistress or having children out of wedlock? You satisfy ur sexual urge but you 4get to think of the consequences your illegal children encounter when they grow up.

I'm not a Muslim (or a Mormon), but I actually believe the idea of polygamy isn't horrible, in a purely abstract sense. As long as all parties are adult and all are willing.

But I feel in reality, it is a very very unwise thing to do, for all the obvious reasons.

If a culture is used to doing something a certain way, and if they believe it is ethically and morally correct, no amount of modeling another way will necessarily sway them to do things another way. If we all live 3 bedroom homes, and people start living in one room houses, and eventually you're in the smallest society still living in 3 bedroom homes, do you move into a one room house or stay where you are?

"The whole civilized world believes in monogamy."

There are plenty of non-Muslims who don't believe in monogamy. Try a web search on polyamory.

Not that I agree with polygamy, but I have to ask.

What's "backward" about it?
