Neither is necessary for keeping pasta from sticking together, if it is boiling properly, the motion of the boiling water will keep everything apart.

Also, only rinse pasta after you've drained it if you are making a cold pasta dish, like a pasta salad. And if you serve pasta immediately after it's done cooking, or stir a little of your sauce into it (like I do), sticking should NEVER be an issue. Hope this helped you out! Happy cooking!

Salt is used to raise the boiling temperature of the cooking water. Pasta should be cooked in a very large amount of water and iIf you periodically stir the pasta while it is cooking it will not stick. The use of oil isn't a good idea because it prevents your sauce from properly sticking/coating the pasta. You should also not rinse the pasta for the same reason.

lots of salt. The oil never is there to keep the strands separate, but to keep the boiling water from foaming. Make sure you boil a gallon of water or more, so that there is less change of temp when noodles are added.

Rinsing is not necessary, but if needed, use hot water. That way it doesn't cool down. You should combine pasta with the sauce immediately after removing it from the water, or pretty soon. That way, the sauce can penetrate the "pores" of the pasta. Some recipes recommend using some of the boiling liquid in the sauce, as a way to thicken.

As a chef in the kitchen I never use oil. Water an oil don't mix Its a waste. Salt is added as flavor. Rapidly boiling water before the pasta is add Then add pasta slowly and stirring.

people use salt to season the water.use oil(preferably olive) to help prevent the pasta from sticking together. also stiring the pasta durring cooking helps. after straining the pasta cool it quickly by rinsing it under cold water and toss it in some more oil.

the salt is used to help the water boil faster. oil is what keeps the pasta from sticking.

salt is for flavor, oil also is for flavor. The ONLY thing that keeps pasta from sticking is a large pot larger the better. more room allows the pasta not to cook in its own starch. Starch=Sticky Never rinse pasta..Drain coat serve!!!!

I remember a chef on tv saying you should never use oil while boiling pasta --- it actually prevents the pasta from cooking properly.

I've always used oil and it seems to be working fairly well. Salt helps the water you put your noodles in to boil faster though.
