Apparently, talking about work, family, etc. just turns the conversation into a horribly dull one.

Ask for advice, just like you did here. Become aware of your surroundings, local news, world news, that person's interests, and your like and dislikes.

Study conversation. Plenty of good books on the topic, check the library.

Conversation can be pretty systemic, such as question-comment-volunteer.

1. Ask them a question that requires thought and isn't a yes or no question.

2. Comment on their response, putting their thought into your own words and letting them know you are really listening.

3. Volunteer a small amount of information about yourself pertaining to the subject.

Go back to step one with a question that plays off of the input you just got from them... wonderfully long conversations full of great tangents can happen that way.

But really, there's more than one way to go about it. I'd encourage further reading to find something that works for you.

Since you're not good at keeping conversations alive, ask short questions that requires the other party to speak more. From there you can perhaps link it to maybe your own personal experience with whatever the other party has mentioned about?Or you can also involve experiences about your friends? You don't have to neccessarily know the whole world to link them up together. Its a small world after all.

Ask questions... be interested... it usually works! If that doesn't work, make friends with people who are "talkers"....lol, you won't have to keep the conversation going, because they won't shut up...(just like I'm doing now) and all you will have to do is nod and agree and they will love you and call you there best friend and a great listener.

The reason you probably cant keep a conversation alive is because you are not deviating enough. Try to talk about different things versus keeping a sole topic in discussion for to long a period of time.

read , watch documentaries, gain knowledge on a great many things. That way you can take the conversation in any directions. It is typical that a person in the situation you are describing just doesn't know what to say next.

Be a good listener. That should prompt you to ask some good questions.

Keep up on current events that should help with conversation starters.

Get people to talk about themselves.

Bring up some of your interest or desires, things you want to accomplish in the future. Ask about the other persons future endeavors. Talk about what's ever on your mind and remember there is no script to stick to.

Find people to hang around with that share your interests. If you have to try hard to keep a conversation going then the other person does not share the same interest in what you hav to say and vise versa.

just ask questions. if you just met the person, there are sure to be stuff your curious about. usually when you ask a question, they will say 'what about you?' then you'll have a chance to answer. relax, and questions/comments should come naturally.
