You can buy a playpen. Try looking at yard sales or consignment stores. My little Pug lost the use of her legs near the end of her life and to keep her from crawling and bruising herself, I would put her in a playpen. She had more room than a small crate but couldn't really get very far. It's much more humane than keeping her in a small crate 24 hrs. a day. You can also buy a harness that goes under the belly with a strap for you to hold her hind
legs up for support when you take her outside to pee; do a search on Google and put in handicapped pets and you will come up with some good sites.

Chamomile tea works very well, and is safe for him.
Dump it out of the teabag, and use 1 teaspoon for small breed, up to 1 tablespoon for a large breed. ( I would use 2 teaspoons for the pug, if he is about 25 pounds) Mix it in a little canned food, such as Mighty Dog, or Cesar's, It will keep him happy, but reduce the stress.and he won't be restless and moving around so much. You can give this as needed to keepp him clam and quiet.
If your grocer doesn't carry chamomlile, you can use 'SleepyTime Tea' as it is the same, but with added herbs. Plain chamomile tastes better to a dog.
When he has to do his "doody" slip a towel under him at his waist, as a sling, and using the towel to take his weight off the hing legs, help him to walk.

My Yorkie broke both of her front legs awhile ago and the doctor said the same thing about not letting her walk. She wanted to stand and move a bit so I ended up letting her because it was too hard to totally keep her from walking. She didn't yelp and got tired easily and would lay or sit down. A few weeks into this they started telling me to try having her put more pressure on her legs. This would cause the fiborous tissue to grow and eventually turn to bone. Which it did.

Oh im so sorry he was hit by a car at least hes still here, i had a cat that broke her leg one time and we just made her a bed in the living room where we could always keep an eye on her, changed her diet to wet food for the time being so she would fill herself up and not eat here and there, and kept her occupied by petting her as much as we could so she wouldnt come to us for attention.
Its hard but good luck its going to be a lot of work until he is 100% better

The only thing I can say is to minumize his walking is to use a small dog crate something he can stand in and move a little but not jump around in but make sure you put a chew toy or something in there with him and pay attention to him as much as you can because just like humans , dogs can and will become depressed if they don't have contact with their owner(s). I know smaller dogs are usually hyper and he might not like you for putting him in it but later he'll love you even more for helping him heal.
Hope this helps you a little...

He won't like it, but he needs to be crated for a while in order to let the bones heal. Make sure he can move comfortably in the crate, but keep moving to a minimum. Sounds crazy, but a half of a children's Bennadryl tablet will help him sleep instead of just being bored. My grandmother has 3 pugs, and one broke each of his hind legs. She gave him Bennadryl to calm him down and help him sleep, then made him spend majority of the time in the crate or in her lap in order to heal. Good luck, I hope he has a speedy recovery! :)

I would ask the vet for some thing that will keep in tranquilized enough so all he wants to do is lay around. Also, keep him in a kennel. I am surprised that the vet didn't give you anything for pain.

I would think he would need his bones pinned. How long did your vet say to do this? Make sure he isn't running and rough housing. Maybe you need to crate him until he's better. It's hard but it's the best thing.

There is a place on the web that sells doggie carts, a sort of wheel chair for dogs. They have them for dogs who can't use their back legs. They even special made a cart for one of my mom's dogs that could not use his front legs. They might be able to help you, make sure to talk to your vet before you do this.

I know its hard, but your dog need to be in a crate for almost 24 hours. the only time you should let the dog out is when the dog needs to go potty. it truely sucks to do this because the dog is unhappy, but this is the only way to keep him from reinjuring him self. When the dog goes potty, carry him out there and then carry him in.
