i am an atheist, and i hated just having to not say the word GOD in the pledge... (even though i love the USA) having a moment of silence when you know every one is probably praying would have really sucked. i do believe in freedom of religion, my daughter for some dame reason believes in god

To play devil's advocate for a moment...

If the Christians are allowed to pray, those that worship Satan are allowed to pray. The thing is, the school is still allowed to prevent free speech that is inheritly damaging, like, say, prayers saying that the guy is going to offer up the school as a tribute to Satan. If the school can respond to a threat of violence if it's not a prayer, there's no reason they can't if it is.

In short: People have freedom of speech... but the government doesn't. Which is mostly intentional: if the government can say/do whatever it wants, the freedoms of the people become irrelevant.

Anyway, yes, Freedom of Speech lets people say things. But public schools are the government, which is forced not to recognize a religion. Therefore, while quiet non-denominational meditation/nap period SHOULD be allowed, any public school official should be disallowed from encouraging students to participate in any religious oriented activity. At least as far as the first ammendment is concerned.

If that is what he believes, he should have a right to do so. I wouldn't want the teacher to lead it, though.

The problem is, the way people understand the laws today, the teacher would force the students to learn the Satanist prayers and forbid a Christian from praying silently over his lunch. Sound fishy? It happens every day.

that's fine. If he wants to pray to Satan let him, just as long as the everyone else can pray to their god. because the fact of the matter is that the only god who really listens and answers prayers is the One True God. Jesus Christ. the one who came to die for our sins, and my kids know that, so let the Satanist pray to what he believes, cause in the end it makes little difference.

Or when a Catholic teacher says that the Catholic Church is the only true church during prayer time?
Or when a Jewish teacher says that Judaism is the only true religion?
Or when a Mormon teacher says that the Catholic pope is the False Prophet from the bible?
Or when a Baptist teacher says that Methodists are going to burn in hell for their liberal ways?

Face it, if the protections of the 1st Amendment were ever un-done, the Atheists would have little to fear. It's the Theists who would rip each other to shreds in a religious civil war. Atheists would sit on the sidelines with popcorn.

I think a moment or two of silence should be permitted at the beginning of school. During that time people can pray to whatever God/force they believe in or they can mediate and clear their minds. I don't like the idea of the teacher/principal lead prayer because many can't pray in a way that includes all people? If the leader says in Jesus name we pray (or whatever)....you alienate those who don't believe in Jesus. If the leader doesn't say in Jesus name (or whatever)......you irriate Christians.

I think that people have gotten prayer out of context . It says to go to the secret place when you pray , not in front of everyone to see . Matthew 6:6

I will say that's okay fine. Because there will be enough Christian kids around to witness to that person, to share the scriptures warning us about sorcery, witchcraft, and honoring the devil. Satan believes in God. Satan is well know by Jesus and knows Jesus well. Satan's angels--demons--know Jesus. They're scared to death of Him. If God is for us, who can be against us! The word will not come back void!

Where there is good there is evil. We know that. We are to live in the world! They will put on the whole armor of God to battle the evil that is swallowing that young person and help them to be free of that bondage.

Aloud? That depends on how loud. It also depends on context. Should one be allowed to pray "Fire!" in a crowded theater? Or in the middle of a crowded spelling test?
