* Eating out is normal and commonplace - it used to be rare.
* We are more affluent and have a bigger food budget.
* We are always rushing and buy readymade/take-aways.
* We don't get natural exercise at work or in the home. We never walk anywhere.
* What used to be treats are now everyday items.
* They say in the UK when we were on wartime rations we were never healthier!
I am carrying extra weight too. I need to stop having a fat-supporting lifestyle.

Americans have the worst diet and the most obesity than any other country in the world. According to what I've read lately, over 60% of Americans are overweight. Don't listen to the rude and unkind words of those who are posting answers here. You have a very legitimate question and concern. We consume far too many calories and have so many conveniences that we've neglected the things that help us remain healthy. Such as walking, riding a bicycle, etc. Fast food is a big problem in this country and processed foods. People have become so busy that they don't cook proper meals and don't take time to exercise. This isn't a critical statement towards Americans, this is a fact! Walking does alot towards keeping your weight down and just eating healthy foods. You don't have to go on some sort of "diet" or anything. Walk a few extra steps each day. Park farther from the stores, walk up stairs instead of using elevators, dance in your bedroom or living room, eat healthy whole grain foods instead of white processed floury and sugary ones. Keep your chin up, don't listen to rude comments, do what makes you feel good and is healthy for YOU! Good luck!

Being over weight is not just an American problem.
but when you add modern conveniences to an almost endless food supply it can add to being obese. Some people are predisposed by genes to be heaver than others .lack of enough exercise is another reason.
I'm not sure any grown woman that weighed 87 lbs and went up to a obese 100 lbs is going to be taken very seriously by obese people. . I am very active and much older than you I think, and I am only 5 lbs heaver than I was in college. I'm 5`5 and my weight is 120lbs.and I can eat anything and not gain, but I have friends that cant eat a salad without gaining weight. Its a serious problem and I don't know the solution to it but one day in the future I'm very sure there will be a cure/system/med that will end this problem. Till then be kind to all human beings, please

Did somebody say McDonald's? haha
I used to drive a delivery route and I was basically forced to eat fast food because I didn't have time to stop. I worked from 7 a.m. until about 9:30 p.m. Breakfast was usually a McDonald's sausage mcmuffin, hash browns and a medium Dr. Pepper. For lunch, I usually had a cheeseburger from a fast food joint or on a good day I'd eat pizza. Dinner was the same way. Not to mention all the sodas I'd drink to keep me alert. I gain 80 pounds in a year. Fortunately, I have gotten off the route and have a job now where I can speed most of the evening playing golf, tennis, running (yuck), or other various activities. I'm not where I want to be as far as weight goes, but I am headed in the right direction.

I've read some of the answers you got and couldn't help notice how mean some people can be! Geesh!
Anyway to help answer your question. People are over weight for many reasons. They make poor food choices then pass them on to their children. It really saddens me to see an obese or overweight child. They don't know any better. They're just doing what their parents taught them. Parents need to take the time to cook healthy foods for their kids and be more active with them. It's easy to just pick up some McD's for them after work and sit them down in front of the tv while they eat more junk at home! At many schools the lunches aren't so healthy either. The child grows up making bad food choices and often with lots of health problems.
As for you gaining a few llbs, don't worry about it. You're body is growing and you can't stay 87 llbs forever! Just make sure you eat right. Cut down on the fried foods and sweets and other junk and make sure you get plenty of excercise. The older you get, the harder it is for your body to lose weight.
Good luck :)

Well, there are several reasons why a large percentage (I think it is near 40%!) of Americans are obese.
Basically it is because:
1. They rarely do any physical work for themselves.
a. Because someone else does it for them because they have the money to pay them to.
b. They drive everywhere and never walk to get where they need to go, unlike other countries where people do a lot of walking every day.
2. They eat unhealthy food and a lot of it.
a. Americans can afford to gorge themselves on a daily basis, unlike those who live in poorer countries who sometimes don't get 2,500 calories a day. Obesity in China is low because they eat healthier foods (rice, vegitables) in lower quantities.
3. They are satiated by the T.V. and spend most of their freetime watching it, instead of doing other things that might cause them to burn a few calories.
Some people say it is the culture that promotes the rising rate of obesity in this country, but I blame it on the individuals who are too lazy and ignorant to care about themselves enough to get up off the couch or out of their SUV to take a little walk in the sunshine and actually see what is going on in this world today.
As for your question about your personal weight: Unless you are under 5 feet tall, you are considered underweight. Which is also a growing problem in America.

The whole population on earth has changed their lifestyle of eating and cooking. People used to have to work and sweat to GROW their food, and gather and store it. That is where the exercise comes in, you had no choice then, and people were stronger, healthier, AND food TASTED BETTER. People today probably don't even know the FLAVOR of an OLD FASHIONED tomato or ear of corn. Todays crops don't have the flavor they should. The ground is completely stripped of the nutrients it used to have. They simply don't put it back in the soil, again, CHEAP fertilizer will turn a BIGGER PROFIT. NOW days, we eat mostly from restaurants of some type or other. Do you KNOW they are about MAKING MONEY?? That's why they are there. They will ALL buy the CHEAPEST QUALITY of food they can get to make the food for you to begin with, because when they charge YOU HUGE PRICES for this cheap food, without much nutrition in it, THEY MAKE A HUGE PROFIT. Why do they care if you want to pay hard earned money for cheap stuff. THEN, ALL animals raised for food ARE FED chemicals to CAUSE them to gain weight because that is how the farmer gets PAID, is by the weight of the meat he sells. These chemicals are in the tissues of the meat as you know they DO put them in big feed lots just before slaughter to get all the weight on them they can get, for MORE MONEY. NOW when you go to the restaurant OR grocery store you BUY all that chemicals and EAT it. NOW where do you suppose ALL that stuff IS GOING??? The restaurants, AND grocery stores, especially PREPARED FOODS, ALL USE MSG. Even the stores, you can't hardly find any food in the store that doesn't have some form of MSG, READ LABELS. If you look it up, you will find it is NOT good for you. It enhances the FLAVOR so when you TASTE all this LOW QUALITY, FATTENING FOOD, you will LOVE it, and ENJOY the drive-up convenience of it as well. SOOO, ENJOY YOUR FAT, !!! Everybody seems to be doing it,, MEEE TOOOO!!! If you will cut out 1 item from your diet, you can LOOSE weight. ALL WHITE FOODS. White flour, sugar, beans, breads, ALL of it. REMEMBER, EAT A RAINBOW EVERYDAY. RAINBOWS ARE NOT< NOT< NOT WHITE!!!! One more thing to consider, God made you the way HE wanted you to look. You DO NOT have to please the PUBLIC MEDIA. ACCEPT WHO YOU ARE, LOVE YOU. There is ONLY one you, and God says HE knew you before you were in the womb, and HE loved you THEN. It is not any mistake of WHY you have the hair type and color, height, bone type, skin color, butt, face, GOD thought YOU would be beautiful to HIMSELF, so WHO cares WHAT ANYBODY else thinks?? You have what you have, enjoy it, fix it up, but love it?? There isn't another.

Our culture thrives on convenience. Most people would rather not make the effort to get out and exercise or even eat right. It's much more convenient to go to a drive through and pick up Mcdonalds rather than grill a chicken breast.
In your case if you are 100 lbs you are not fat at all. There are several charts available online as to what the proper weight for your height is. If you weigh 100 lbs you're probably fine at that weight. You didn't list your height or age so I have no idea what the recommended weight for you is. I have a friend who is 5'4" 108 lbs and she is right where she needs to be, and trust me she is NOT fat.

The main reason that ppl are overweight is due to poor education and all of the junk food available today. People need to be educated on the dangers of being overweight and should have more opportunities to exercise. For example, many say that you should go to a gym, but what about the ppl whom can not afford to pay the membership? There should be programs to help ppl lose the weight w/o it being so expensive.

Well you should be at least 100lb for your height anyway. I have a feeling by overweight you mean like over 100lb, which I frankly find disturbing. If you are talking about truly overweight people and I mean in the medical sense of being overweight with a BMI of over 25, not because their BMI isn't under 18.5, then I guess it's just because of lifestyle, lack of exercise, too much fast food and not enough emphasis of being fit and healthy. But from the sounds of it, you have a very wharped idea of wheat overweight actually is and you should NOT be less than 100lb!
