Not for one day, but maybe if everyone stopped driving for a week or two, then the oil/gas companies could catch up to Americas demand and the prices may lower.

I certainly do. And I don't think it would matter which day in the week , either, just one day in the week , a car was left parked and did not buy or use the fuel that it would have normally used on that day. What I mean is park the car, do the things that you normally would have done on that day, but ride with someone. Carry on your normal day , but commute or share a ride. Thus our daily life is maintained, but the oil companies and speculators do not get the purchase of that oil and oil company is left holding that gas, that you normally would have bought. You have saved the purchase of that day's fuel. It could be done, with planning. Americans are not devoid of the ability to sacrifice. Our soldiers in Iraq and other places overseas are sacrificing every day. We can do no less. I'm not putting this on a patriotic level. But not buying or using the normal fuel for a day in a week is not a big sacrifice and I can guarantee that the oil companies would definetly notice a 14% decline in fuel sales. You betcha they would. And carried on for week by week, I am certain that the brokers and speculators would realize that Americans are not sheep. How about it? This rising price for me , has me about strapped. How much more can the working commuting worker afford, before the cost of fuel comes off his family's table? You answer me that.
Last spring sometime, while reading the NY Times online, it was reported in a story, column or editorial that an officer in an oil production organization stated that the only way the american people could control the rise in oil prices at the pump was for an organized boycott by the consumers at the pump. The writer of this particular article, noted that in the next few days from this statement , the oil prices droppped precipitiously. But nothing happened . So the prices continued their mercurial jumps for trumped up reasons and the oil companies coffers oare overflowing. Not to say that the progenitors of these oil price spikes, but they sure aren't complaining at the results And keep in mind neither are the tax collectors and budget administrators at each level of government. Are fuel taxes are bloating the tax bank accounts, since fuel taxes are figured on percentages and the higher the sticker price, the more the tax revenue is due. And the budget people aren't compaining. Its money they don't have to beg the taxpayer for. So....The only loser all around is you the taxpayer..and or consumer. I say we have only ourselves to blame. What do you say to all this?
Actuallly, as a sidebar, I have been told that the latinos in this country were able to organize their boycott, and demonstrations across the country and in the media , by a very simple and basic means. "By word of mouth and probably posted fliers, spread through their work places and through their church organizations across the country. And they got the people out on the street! Is not the Rising Cost of Fuel just as important. The high cost of fuel could cripple this country's economy, ability to get to work and our quality of life. Can we not take a lesson from the Latino Community and Get the word out . Make an IMPACT. It is up to us.

Take the difference in cost between gas prices today and those in 1950 and run that number through an average inflation formula. Gas isn't so rediculously priced as we think. Also calculate filling your car with any other liquid (ie milk or beer) Calculate how much a tall can of gas costs. I'm impressed that gas is as cheap as it is. The answer isn't lowering the price of gas, it's raising the average mpg.

Did you know that
America Exports 75% of the oil we produce here
Venezula pays less than 1 dollar a gallon for gas beacuse the government subsides it, rather than taxing it.
The war in Iraq uses more fuel in a day than the State of Vermont uses in a week.
The promblem with gas prices is not oil companies as much as it is our government

No. They will raise their prices to make up for whatever they might have lost on the protest day. Of course, the entire nation will never stop using fuel for an entire day, so we will never know.

no, because they no that evenutally we will have to buy gas. say the next day. and maybe even more gas will be purchased the next day because those who didnt buy the day before that need to will have to buy the next day. this would cause a short term shortage and prices would rise in the short term, but in the long run it would have no effect on our demand or the companies supply.
