Could it be possible that there is no "grand plan" for human existance? Maybe the point is that we should enjoy our lives while we can, love ourselves and each other, treat our pets decently, feed the squirrels and the pigeons, and just be cool with the universe?

Just a thought.

Ahem. I asked this as a rebuttal of sorts to the bazillions of 'What's the meaning of life?" questions I see here every day:)

You're right. The only 'meaning of life' is whatever we choose it to be... and if you choose feeding squirrels and chilling out, more power to you for that :-)

of coz we don't need to find the meaning of life, yet we still survive and die eventually, regardless of what we did.

But I always believe, it is a luck to become human. Look at the sky and your surrounding, there are so many things, with or without life. Why you are not part of them, but you? buy calculating the probability, it is really really a rare case to become a creature, while it is even rare to become human... it is really a wonderful luck.... I estimate the next time if I can be a human again, it may takes million of years... hope human wont be extinct that time...
So, do you feel curious why we are here..... we possess the intelligent, luckier than other creature, we have a better chance to know more about our life, don't you think if we don't find it out, it is really a waste?

If you go to other countries for travelling, won't you just sit inside hotel and lie down, enjoying the air-cond? or go out to understand the new country you visiting, and know how they come about, to not waste of your journey...

of coz, it is personal choice.

Then that's your "meaning of life" which is pretty much in sync with God's "grand plan" for human existence. i.e. Love God (respect His creation by treating your pets decently, feeding squirrles and pigeons and be cool with the universe), love each other as yourselves (enjoy your life, love one another).

I would recommend reading a book called The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren

I would ask myself:
Is there a God.
If so, does he/it/whatever care about his creation or did he create and then just forget about it.
From experience (I'm 59) I think that the best way to be happy is to live by God's rules (I've tried the other ways).
Or, if they aren't divine rules but human rules they are still a good guide.
It isn't easy to stick to the rules (and I'm far from doing that) but I admire those who can.

I agree. Some people, however, aren't comfortable just existing. Some need a reason to be. It's just like some people aren't comfortable thinking there's no God watching over them at all times- others are cool with it.

I'm one of those who is alright with there not being a plan or a God.

All arguments on free will aside, the "meaning of life" is important to ponder because God created us for a purpose -- and that is to resepect Him and obey Him.

  "Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the whole duty of man.

For God will bring every deed into judgment,
       including every hidden thing,
whether it is good or evil."

Some philosopher or other said that to be happy you need to accept that life may indeed have no rhyme or reason.I agree with what you say. First do no harm. Hippocratic oath I think. Some questions are quite thought provoking. Thank you

Yep. Definitely possible. In order for there be a meaning to life, there has to be something trying to convey that meaning. If the creation of the universe wasn't based on something sentient, then that's impossible.

And if the creation of the universe was by god, a sentient entity... what's the meaning of god? If we assume god as the first cause, there is no meaning to god: nothing is trying to communicate a message to god by having him exist. So god has no meaning! ... not in the sense that god is unimportant, but that god doesn't have to search for meanings in its existence...

I completely agree!

I think some people want a "meaning to life" so they feel theirs isn't meaningless (not to say, that people who believe there is a "meaning to life" are worthless!)

Or maybe is it possible that your question is YOUR meaning to life? To live your life to the best you can without always trying to find a reason for everything.

Definately a question to think about...

The oldest and most difficult philosophical question. I believe something similar to you, that we should enjoy life and try to leave the world a better place than we found it.
