You can put a shortcut (icon) on your desktop to initiate the screen saver. Double-click the shortcut icon when you want the screen saver to run. Two problems must be dealt with, though:
1.Since the screen saver stops when you move the mouse, simply removing your hand from the mouse (when double-clicking to initiate the screen saver) can cause the screen saver to stop.
2.You have to close any window you are working in before you could double-click the shortcut on the desktop..
There are two ways around that:
A Move the shortcut to the Quick Launch area:
First, create the desktop shortcut: Right-click an empty area on your desktop and click Properties. Click the Screen Saver tab. Click the down arrow on the Screen Saver drop-down list box and choose a screen saver you like (when you click on a screen saver in this list, a preview is displayed in the preview above it).
The screen saver file locations in earlier Windows versions are at:
98 and ME: C:\Windows\System
2000: C:\WINNT\System32
XP: C:\Windows\System32. They begin with the letters “ss” in the alphabetized listing. The file names here are similar to the names in the screen saver list.
Next, to create the shortcut: right-click an empty area on the desktop and click New, Shortcut. Click the Browse button and navigate to the System32 folder. Scroll to the S listings and click the screen saver file (this file will end in the extension .SCR). Click OK. Click the Next button. Enter a name for the shortcut and click the Finish button.
That puts the shortcut icon on your desktop. The Quick Launch area is to the right of the Start button. If you do not see the Quick Launch area, right-click a blank area of the taskbar and click Properties. Click Show Quick Launch. Be sure to check the box next to “Keep the taskbar on top of other windows.” Click Apply and then click OK.
Now, right-click a blank area of the taskbar. If there is a check mark to the left of “Lock the Taskbar,” click this to unlock the taskbar. Unlocking the taskbar allows you to drag the shortcut icon to the Quick Launch area and drop it. Move the Quick Launch border to the right to enlarge the area, if necessary.
After the new icon is in the Quick Launch area, right-click a blank area of the taskbar and click on “Lock the Taskbar.” This will lock the taskbar again.
To launch the screen saver, point the cursor to the icon in the Quick Launch area and click it once. Remember to remove your hand from the mouse quickly.
B Or use a keyboard shortcut (this is an easier method).
To create a keyboard shortcut: create a shortcut on the desktop as described above. Right-click the shortcut on your desktop. On the Shortcut tab, find Shortcut Key. The word “None” will be in the box. Position the cursor after the word “None” and press Ctrl+Alt+S (or another letter). That will create the keyboard shortcut.
To start the screen saver: depress the three keys simultaneously. The screen saver will start immediately and you don’t have to worry about the mouse moving when you initiate the screen saver.
