Believe it or not, the Guiness Book of World Records has this in their Category! Here's what they have to say!

Best Selling Non-Fiction Book
The world's best-selling and most widely distributed book is the Bible, with an estimated 2.5 billion copies sold since 1815. It has been translated into 2,233 languages and dialects. The Christian Bible as we know it today is in two parts, the Old Testament and the 27 books of the New Testament, written between 50 and 150 AD. The latter and some of the additional books were originally written in Greek. The order of books, as well as its number, differs between the Jewish version and that of Protestants and Roman Catholics. No original copies or autographs have ever been found.

Guess what came in second?

Mao Tse-Tung's Little Red Book was sold or given away to around 900 million.

Cheers.

PS

Almost forgot to mention that the Bible's figures are based on acutal Sales Revenues accounted for by the Church; and do not account for the freely distributed and given away copies! That would more than double the original figure.

The Ko'aran, incidentally comes a third.

The Da Vinci Code !

I think it could be the Art of War by Tsun Tsu - lot of Chinese read it - they have the largest population.

One might say The Bible - but I think a lot of people own the Bible, but actually do not read it - or have not read it from the beginning to the end.

Well the best known is definitely the Bible and the Koran. But since the Bagawat Geethawalie was there 2000 years before, I guess in History, the count would be more on that.

The Bible is also very dull and boring, except where it is nasty vicious instead. The King James Version has superb language style, if you cotton to high Middle English, but the language style doesn't make up for the deficiency of the narrative's ability to hold the reader's interest. In fact, I wonder whether the Bible is actually the most read book in history. It might be the most owned, maybe even the most carried, book in history, but that's not the same thing.

The Bible is the most read book but actually it is the least known. Very few people understand the Bible and even those who think they do may not be totally right in their understanding.

I don't know for sure, but I know the best book ever written (according to the "experts") is Don Quixote. I would say the bible is pretty well read, although that's probably not a good thing.

Probably the Bible. According to sales, the best selling is the Bible; second is Dr. Spock's baby book.
