You could try a cake shaped like a musical note. A normal round cake pan would work for the bottom part, and you could cut parts out of a second cake to make the stem of the note. Or you could make a sheet cake with white frosting and use black frosting for musical notes and bars.
Another option would be to make a cake in the shape of a musical instrument. A piano would be fairly easy. You could use black frosting to make the black keys.
The links below show a few picture ideas for different musical cakes. And as a smaller recommendation, you might want to make a separate cupcake for the birthday boy. No matter what kind of cake he has, it will end up all over his face.Good luck!

Go to any Pawn-shop, and buy, some really cheap, CDs, that noone, would listen, too........ For, the cake, take, some vanilla wafers, and try to shave off some of the rounded edges, off the top. Get some dark, and colorful, icings, and color, the wafers, like dark first, then, in the center make them look like CDs, do, I'd take the old CDs, you got from the pawn shop, and put them all over the walls, you could even take some ribbon, and hang some CDs, with the Balloons, up, over, your dining room, light fixture, and make a Banner, that reads, not only Happy Birthday, but, take a real CD, to trase, the circles, with, and color in his favorite, music, for the titles, on those CDs, on his banner..... Have Fun, with it !!!! You could even go one step further, and put some old cassettes, and records, everywhere, on your walls. How exciting, I would really have fun with that one,,,,, Enjoy!!
