One of my friends told me i might require a boot floppy ! Do i need one and if yes how do use it to format the harddisk ?

If you're reinstalling your Windows XP, you can boot off the install CD and run the recovery console to format the drive. If you have to use a floppy with a USB floppy drive, just make sure in the BIOS you enable booting to external disc, or manually select the boot device. (Hit usually either F1, F2, F11, F12, Del or ESC when the computer first turns on) Once you're in DOS, use the format command to format the drive. Format /? will give you a list of options to run.

you make the pen drive as first bootable device and try to format the hardisk through your pen drive...!
