what are the subjects that help contemporary art to sell successfully these days?
For example, I could paint a beautiful picture of a horse, but there are probably lots of people doing this already and its not neccessarlily catching the buyers imagination. How do you get inspiration for original work?

I get all my inspiration form the one and only Tony Hart. I've displayed and sold several painting created by filling empty washing up bottles with poster paint and suspending them from a piece of string and swirling it round and round on a large canvas. I then get a small Plasticine character to walk over it and generally mess it up. Everyone a masterpiece. I also get people to send in the their best paintings, (which I'm unable to send back) and palm them off with £2.99 box of gouache from Woolies. I then sell the best ones as my own work and watch the money roll in. Happy painting. If you are keen on the horse try chopping it in half

What sells is what people see out of their windows every day. If you like landscapes, paint some local scenes
Don't make the paintings "personal" ie nobody wants a painting of your Great Aunt Maud.
Inspiration comes from the strangest of places. Look around at other art works. Ask yourself what you like about particular paintings and write it down. By the time you produce your own version. it'll be unrecognizable
You won't make a lot of money tho'
Good Luck !

Paintings sell not because of the subject but because of the reaction a person gets when viewing it. To a large extent, being true to yourself as an artist translates to the canvas. When a painting is true, it resonates with many people. Learn how to be true to your work...make it not for money but for understanding the medium, the subject, the technique and the innovation. Some people can imitate truth, and sell to naive buyers... but beyond the fakers it is the truthful artist who gets recognized.

It doesn't matter where the idea comes from, just keep it origanal and your own idea. Make it as imaginative and as different as you want it to be. I also want want to produce paintings. Sellers buy paintings which come from natural-born painters and with you coming on this site and being curious about paintings shows that you are a natural.
REMEMBER:Just keep it original and your own design no matter what design it is and how colorful. You find inspiration from anything what makes your eyes light up and yourself like.

My inspiration is nature. I take photos of strange things like a group of pebbles then paint them. or a close up picture of bark. Nothing is ugly in nature. Also you will appeal to the widest audience as minimalist paintings of neutral things like rock, water, sky, plants, sand etc are all the rage at the mo. I am sure if you try a photo of these things once you will be hooked. I am.
I have sold a few of mine.
Good luck

art today is the crapiest job you can rely on. i'm a artist myself, but it seems like art is an occation thing for people. you may have displays, shows, or products, but there is no guarantee that someone will buy it.

all i can tell you is the best way to be known is to have fans or people that knows you and spreads the words. here is a example of what i mean:

also, look at this sites:

musicfreedom.com/charisdondeli
myspace.com/cherubains007
zazzle.com/makaku777*

it's my websites and all, but no one even though of getting my products. but i do have fans all over, which is good. build your friendship with fans, and when you become famous, you'll make money by a blink of an eye.

good luck and don't forget to check my sites to get ideas. if you do like it, contact me!

iv'e sold a fair amount of my artwork.

What tends to sell well is if you paint big paintings of movie
icons / music stars.
Frank Zappa, any of the beatles, rolling stones, Jimmy Hendrix, James Dean, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood. etc.....
Everyone has a famouse screen or music icon.
its just getting the right picture.

Another subject that tends to work is if you paint/pastel the human form in intresting poses. someone curled up in a ball, the muscles on their back/ shape of their spine.
Try useing different colours to what you would normally use.

Good luck Amigo

Go with whats around you everyday!
Alot of young artist are using what they see everyday e.g modern technology, grafitti, logos, what people wear, transport.

Make sure you carve your own style into it because original eye catching style is what sells.

You can start your own website really cheap and have it look really professional and have paypal. Its called a takeaway website (Mr.Site) available from www.iwoot.com

A good place to see other people that have just set up like you is
www.ideasfactory.com then go to the small ads and look out for people advertising their own websites.

best of luck!

take a very strong personal emotion you have experienced and translate it onto the canvas

true emotion will show, even if you are not very good at painting and someone will probably relate to it
