Why don't you stop leaning on a 2000 year old work of fiction, and get your own life. Make your own decisions. Live the way you want to live.

No?

Thought so.

I think it is less of a crutch and more like one of those motorized scooters... with a helper monkey, they definitely need the helper monkey.

This is a good question because I used to be a Satanist and now I am a christian. Many will say that I was not a 100% satanist since now I am a christian, but anyhow to get to your question I have been reading the bible nonstop as of lately and the bible prooves that situations that are occuring these days had been mentioned in the bible. This is not even counting people in the bible that predicted things and then a 100 years later another person seen the same vision. Then after that the vision came true. So my advice for you is to study. Find the religion that is right for you because man cannot survive on their own.

It would be the same as saying we are weak because grocery stores provide us packaged food. If the world changed and food was no longer provided for us, we would be weak in the respect that we are used to that convenience. Religion provides the same thing. A moral stop that we can fill our spiritual need. Both frees us up to live life. So I guess when you think about it, many things are crutches for us.

Maybe if life turned really bad certain beliefs would not seem so much like fiction.

If that is true, than most of the world is "weak"
No matter what the religion is, it's something that can strengthen people. Buddism, Wiccan, Judaism, Christianity and thousands of more obscure religions help billions of people around the globe.
Religion isn't a sign of weakness, it's just someones way of dealing with things. Some meditate, some pray, some people write down things. Some of these people are Atheist, some aren't. It has nothing to do with weakness, just culture and personal tastes.

You're weak. You're mind cannot stay away from sinning and mocking the word of God.
2nd Peter Chapter 3.

3
Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
4
And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
5
For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
6
Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
perished Gen 6:13, Gen 6:17, Gen 7:21, Matt 24:39, Luke 17:27
7
But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

I was raised Catholic and right now I'm just spiritual. I don't believe in a God, but I do believe that we are all Gods. i believe in spirituality and Mother Nature. This world we live on survives from us and thrives on how we treat it. I think as far as where we go or what we do in the after life (if there is an after life) depends on how you want it to be. I think that we create our own life ever after. I think the best movie that portrays that is with Robin Williams in What Dreams May Come. I think another good movie to explain how I feel and what I think is What the Bleep do We Know? I also believe in right and wrong and the philosophy "treat others as you would like to be treated". There are many different organized religions and they are a bunch of hooey in my opinion. They want your money and they want you to believe in the same things they believe in and if you have any inkling of a different thought, Oh Boy! watch out! If there is a such thing as a God, why would he give us the power of free thinking?

I am living exactly as I want to live. I am very happy with my life just as it is, just as you seem to be happy with yours.

As far as religion being a crutch, I don't see how that is possible. Something that is a crutch is supposed to make things easier for you right? Well, religion does not make life easier, it makes it harder and more challenging. Especially with the anti-religious sentiment everywhere (like your question for instance). I cannot and will not say it is a crutch, it is just a higher standard to hold oneself to. If you do not hold yourself to a standard above what you are now, there is no way that you will improve in any way. I hold myself to a lofty standard. Though I know I will not reach it this side of heaven, I still hold myself to it so that i constantly have room to grow and improve.

You want a metaphor for religion (specifically Christian as you are referring to), think of it as a very realist mirror. It reveals to you who you really are and how you really look. That view is not pretty at all, thus, like when you get ready in front os the mirror every day, you strive to make that image looking back at you better and better.

No matter where you stand on this subject, I find that it is useful to always consult a known authority before taking action - especially when it could get me in trouble.

Having said that, I believe that the Bible, Koran, and other Holy books have some great wisdom inside. For a person to believe that the religious are weak, or are using God for a crutch I find that to be less than tolerant.

I have to admit that there are benefits to atheism (if that's your thing) as well as being religious. The key idea is to respect the person no matter what you think of their beliefs.

Everyone's weak at some point, so what's the harm in using a crutch? That's exactly what religion is. A crutch. SO? Who cares. It's nice to be able to lean some1 or something now and then you know?

I suppose religion can be a crutch for some...

Christianity is different from other beliefs in that it is not about religion (our attempt to live a "good life" and earn God's favor) -- rather, it is about what God has already done for us in Jesus Christ. If I fully understand my own depravity/sinfulness, I know that I deserve absolutely nothing from God. What could I possibly do that would impress Him? Despite that, God loves me and sent Christ to restore my relationship with Him. Without God's grace in Jesus, I have nothing.

Therefore, Christianity isn't really a crutch...its more like a wheelbarrow! I can't do it on my own, Christ has to carry me all the way.

To the atheist, that sounds like repulsive weakness. On the contrary, it calls for total submission of self and putting your life in the hands of God.

BTW: your term "work of fiction" indicates that you have absolutely no knowledge of historical facts...

For about half the people who are religious, yes, it's just a crutch for the emotionally weak. For the other half or so, they've just been brought up that way and have never paused long enough to consider the possibility they've been deceived. The latter group tend to not really be religious in practice.
