I've been invivited to a clam bake..on the beach.This would include corn on the cob, lobster, and clam chowder. I was asked to bring Wine and I want to make a good impression.

As others have suggested, I would go with a white wine, not too sweet. Naturally you have to estimate how sophisticated your friends' tastes are. I would suggest bringing several bottles, especially considering on how many people are coming.

This presents a problem as you can quickly go broke making these decisions. You are fortunate, however, because a clam bake doesn't require sophisticated wine; just wine that is worth drinking. My advice is for you to go to a wine store, tell them your situation, including whatever budget you may have. If he suggests anything over $15 per bottle, tell him to think lower. Less than 10 per bottle and you might be asking for trouble, unless your friends are real innocents or the wine is a real find.

Under no circumstances should you choose white zinfandel, unless, of course they are filling their lighters or you just don't like them!

I'm pretty sure seafood goes with white wine. Don't get a cheapo one in a big jug, though.

Chardonnay, particularly the majority of domestic ones, has a rich, almost buttery taste. The best match would be a seafood dish with a warm, rich, buttery or creamy sauce. Pairing similar flavor characteristics of food and wine make excellent combinations. The best choices in fish for this varietal would be lobster, crab, tuna, swordfish, or shark. Other light fishes can also pair well with chardonnay, if the sauce is rich enough.

Sauvignon blanc is lighter in body, crisp tasting, with flavors of fresh herbs, green grass, and citrus. Try this wine with fresh, simply prepared or cold seafood. Shrimp, oysters, clams, mussels, and light fishes such as mahi-mahi with a simple wine sauce and fresh herbs would all be delicious with sauvignon blanc.

Definitely a white wine, but you might want something in addition to chardonnay if you go that way. Not everyone likes the woody taste most chardonnays have. Sauvignon blanc would be my choice.

Definitely go with a white, such as a French Muscadet (noticeable seafoam aroma) or Sauvignon Blanc from anywhere.

I would take a good Australian Chardonnay, like yellow tail. The buttery flavor goes really well with seafood and grilled foods, and it's not so expensive that you can't afford to buy more than one bottle to take with you. :)

usually a two- to three-year old bratty kid whines really well at a clam bake, especially if it's hot outside and the kid doesn't have any toys and didn't take his afternoon nap.

A nice white wine, probably you'd want to offer a fruity one, not something too dry.
