If you can afford a $40 HAIRCUT, why are you stressing over the tip??? I'd say that the standard is 15 to 20%. But it must be a ritzy place, so maybe $5 for the washing girl and $10 for the stylist if she does a great job. I've never spent that much just for a cut, so I'm not sure.

15-20% for the stylist (so $6-8) and $2-3 for the girl who washes your hair. I overtip though, and then I get free treatments, eyebrow waxes, and worked in whenever I want. You get the service you pay for.

wow i've never tipped my stylist but i don't go to some big fancy expensive place. i live in a small town and i go to the stylist up town. she does a great job and the most i've spent was $17.00 for a shampoo, cut, and style. i've never had a better hair cut than what she does.
