I have 7 years of exp. as a software engineer and then I took a break of almost 1.5years. Now I want to start working again, but do not want to go back to coding. I want to take up more managerial roles, but in the past I had always worked mainly as a principal engineer with concentration on coding. But now after a break, can I apply for a project manager's role?

A lot of Sr. Project managers in that industry have close to 10 years of experience or more. With 7 years, however, you shouldn't have too many problems. You may be able to get Project Manager but not Sr. Project Manager.

Don't do it! Don't go to the dark side.

Just because you were a good coder doesn't mean you'll make a good manager, especially if you don't have experience and a relevant degree.

Better to go back to coding, and if you absolutely have to get into management, get gigs as a team lead; if you can prove yourslef there, moving to project management and then real management should come easily.
