Easy there, friend.
Remember, we only have two cheeks.
So, if someone does something to me that is hurtful, I will turn the other cheek. If they do it again, I don't have a third cheek to turn to, so I take action. And the action does not need to be motivated by vengeance.
The saying, for me, is more about not acting too quickly and to think carefully about how to respond to a situation.
Your right - it would be silly to allow someone to treat you with disrespect on a continuing basis.

That's a perfect example of "violence begets violence"! I don't agree with you! I agree that if you are being attacked or someone you care about is being attacked by a perpetrator, then there are times when you need to fight back. But to fight with someone because you've been in a disagreement or just because they've lashed out at you is wrong, in my opinion. I realize that there are always special circumstances to every rule but, for the most part, hitting back is usually not a good idea. And, in my opinion, lashing back is not "honorable" so it does not maintain your honor, it lowers you to their standards. No matter who wins the physical part, you've now lost the "honorable" part. The best way to overcome "evil" is to kill it with kindness! This, of course, is only my opinion.

Yes, I do. However, I believe love sometimes also involves not being an enabler. It's all about doing the loving thing which may vary by situation & by person. As to vengeance, that's God's job since He is the judge.

Even the Bible says, "be angry but sin not." So, there must be a point that you can get mad and still be ok. Also, Jesus went into the temple and started throwing crap around, so if Jesus has a temper, than you have to figure I would have one as well.
I always found it funny that he said cheek. You only have four of those, after that what do you do? I firmly believe it's ok to fight back.

"Self-defense" is different than "vengeance", IMHO. Fighting back to stop a current attack is one thing. Going on the offensive with the rationalization that you're "stopping future attacks" is something else, and it's asking for some serious retribution if you indulge in it.

Would you become that person? Is that what you want to be, the same as the people that hurt you? None of us are perfect but we are called not to retaliate in order that we dont commit the same sins as those who hurt you. We are called to reconcile the offenders to us. Read Romans 12:15-21, see if that helps

Human nature tells us to get even, instead of turn the other cheek. But have you ever really tried turning the other cheek?I have and found great satisfaction seeing a person mistreat me and i respond with love instead of hate.the satisfaction is watching that person try and hide under a rock because they didn't get the responce they wanted to fuel there fire
