Look around for some pictures as inspiration (but don't expect to look exactly like it, because everyone's hair is different and will react differently). Explain thoroughly to the stylist what you are hoping for in terms of length, style, and color. Tell him/her what you plan on doing as far as fixing your hair goes (spikey, brushed down, etc.). Also, you might want to ask for a referral to a trusted stylist if you don't already have one, because not all hair stylists are that good. Good Luck!

You go to the hairdresser and she/he will ask you about the style (they have books you can look through and they'll advise you on what styles will look best on you) and advise you on the best highlight scheme to suit that style. If you have long hair and you're used to long hair you might hate the new style at first but give it time and you'll adjust. Good luck.

Just ask for a trim. Hairdressers are notorious for cutting more than you asked for.
