This is a question regarding Christian history. The simple and short answer is that at one point in time, for over 1,500 years, there was only one Christians Church in existence: The Roman Catholic Church. Sadly, because of mistakes and sin from within the Church and outside of it as well, a split occurred, called the Protestant Reformation. This fracture has continued to fracture until we have what we have today - thousands of different Christian churches and everybody doing their own thing and no one really knowing which end is up.

I was a protestant who became a Catholic. Everyone makes mistakes, both Catholic and non-Catholic, but wouldn't it be wonderful if the whole world united again in Christ's original Church? Imagine the peace and unity. Imagine the love.

I pray for this everyday.

Do some research and you'll see what I mean.

God bless.

It all has to do with how we view church government. Some like having central control others are more Congregational. Then there are the cults created by crazy people.. But then they aren't even considered christian by the general christian body.. I for one don't think of a Catholic Christian or a Lutheran Christian or any other denominational Christian as being separate. It's all really the same church. It's just these pity governmental issues...

I think if you look into the divisions between Sunnis and Shites, and orthodox and reform Jews, that you'll find equally profound divisions. Christian divisions may be greater in total numbers, but the extent of the divisions within the three major western religions is pretty analogous.

The Jews have avoided violence within their factions, but that's about the only difference with the other two.

Islam and Judaism also have many sects ranging from ultra-conservative orthodox to liberal modernists.

For example, there's one war going on right now that involves Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims.

Actually, all world religions are divided into different groups & subgroups. However, when discussing world religions, only the divisions within Christianity are emphasized.

Muslims are still going through that little "phase" where orthodoxy is preserved through execution.
